The old growth gets brown, snow crushed, or otherwise tatty so I cut it off. This allows the new growth to come in nicely. I got this Zenport for the first time because the last one of my usual Astron brand seemed to have lost quality - sheered off teeth pretty quickly. So this Zenport looks pretty similar, the teeth are a trifle shorter. It does very well with the ferns and other light pruning - big grass mounds, water reeds, etc.. It is not as robust for the salmon berry canes, or huckleberry branches. From the other reviews it seems there is some misunderstanding about how to use these knives. They are an up close, selective pruning, or hands and knees lawn and path work tool. I am addicted to them because arthritis makes hand pruning shears difficult. These are easy to grasp and your arm does the work, not your fingers. I have not used it long enough to know if the stainless steel will rust. if it doesn't, that is a plus. My Astron knives do rust. The shape and action is the same, and the orange makes it way easy to find in the grass and shrubs.
