Review: A true masterpiece - “We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster...But to feel nothing so as to not feel anything - What a waste” “As you did back then, look me in the face, hold my gaze, and call me by your name” I struggle to articulate the words to explain how much I love this book but I’ll give it my best shot. I watched the film adaptation of this story when it first came out and immediately fell in love with it (slight issue with the rumour of Armie eating people but we’ll brush over that for now🥴) and knew I just had to get my hands on the book, The imagery and writing in this book takes my breath away every time and I could honestly pick quotes out for days... I found the POV of Elio to be extremely true to that of the mindset of a teenage boy trying to work himself out and it made the novel so much more realistic to read The way Elio and Oliver talk about and behave around each other is so heartwarming and so beautiful to explore. Could the age gap in this book be deemed problematic? Possibly, but I guarantee everyone knows someone in their own lives with a similar gap 🤷🏻♀️ The lack of the typical HEA at the end of the story was so refreshing and again realistic to read and was so relevant for a relationship of this nature in a time unlike our own. Overall this is a beautiful and profound coming of age story that will truly move you and lead you to evaluate some of your own choices... I honestly cannot recommend this book enough 🌻 Review: Just beautiful - O my I loved the film but the book is so much more , I was so moved by the last 40 pages x I sobbed , just so beautifull xxx a masterpiece of a book x

Wow.
One of the best books I have ever read and likely one of the very few I will re-read.

movie poster cover
Delivered faster than suggested on here, however I chose this version of the book as it had the original cover and not the movie poster. When it arrived, the book had the movie poster cover. Otherwise perfect.

Drowning in a sea of synonyms somewhere of the Italian coast near ‘B’
I wanted to find myself lost in the lazy hazy summer skies of the Italian coastline in this story of sexual discovery and lustful yearning between Elio and visiting American student Oliver as it held the promise of being a beautiful coming of age story, however after a few chapters the author’s need to over describe, poeticise and draw out ever single scene rather than selected scenes for more impact, soon became tiresome, laborious and repetitive, doing nothing to carry the story forward, instead we find ourselves wading through and drowning in an ever deepening sea of synonyms as the author goes rambling off on yet another tangent. Rather than enveloping me into the story this had the opposite effect of making me lose interest and put the book down. I did however stick the book out and about half way through the pace did pick up just enough to carry me through to the end. Certain aspects I found quite jarring, our main character Elio is supposedly infatuated and all consumed with Oliver yet at the drop of the hat seems to be off having sex with a girlfriend, also after all the poetic prose the author’s bizarre habit of describing place names with a sing letter such as ‘B’ Clashes with the otherwise overly descriptive style. Although the premise was good and enjoyable when it finally did get going, I felt the book overly long and, disappointingly, a chore to finish. It felt like a short story that had been dragged out to be twice as long as it should. Sad to say I certainly won’t be rushing to buy the sequel.

Literary masterpiece
Amazing book, I highly recommend. I’d go as far to say it’s a masterpiece of literature. It’s so different yet the exact same as the movie.
