I purchased this book for my trip to Shanghai, it had everything I needed to know to have an idea of the city and its main and touristic areas. It has a lot of recommendations for restaurants hotels and more ranking from $-$$$ i recommend it if you have a trip very soon to Shanghai and btw you will love the city

Did not give you enough info on how to prepare for the fact that the Chinese government bans Google Maps and Translate so that you can't use them there (We ended up getting a VPN so that we could) It also didn't give much information on how electronic payments are pretty much mandatory for everything so you can only use Alipay or Weixin pay for things like public transit. Instead the guide focused on the tourist sites - information that you can easily find on the internet if you just google "Shanghai Tourist Attractions" I didn't even take the book with with me on the trip - wasn't worth the additional weight in my luggage!

This guidebook was a major letdown. It reads less like a curated insider’s guide and more like someone skimmed Google for an afternoon and called it a day. The “top picks” are sparse, generic, and in my spot-checks, overwhelmingly tourist-trap territory. What surprised me most was how little of the book actually reflects China itself. Instead of showcasing the depth, character, and local flavor of the places I’m traveling to, it kept steering me toward random “global” experiences like Spanish cuisine, a Jewish synagogue, and other stops that felt completely out of place for a trip where I’m specifically looking to immerse myself in China. If I wanted to feel like I was back in a Western city, I wouldn’t be flying across the world. For a brand with Lonely Planet’s reputation, this felt rushed, shallow, and far from the thoughtful, on-the-ground expertise I expect. Not recommended.
