worked well on thin sheet metal
We were working on a craft project that required holes through small sheet metal covers to mount solar lights. The holes were 11/16 inch diameter and these step bits cut a nice, clean round hole in the metal. The bits have angled shafts to prevent rotation in the drill chuck, and seem sturdy and sharp. For cutting something thicker, like wood, I think it would work easier to see clearly when the various step levels occur, because you have more resistance. But overall these worked great for our project, and a new addition to the variety of drill bits we need and use around our DIY projects.

Worked great
Drilled a hole in my stainless steel sink for an air gap for the dishwasher in about 10 (fairly exciting) minutes of drilling. I needed a hole the entire size of the bit so this put it through a pretty good test. For a small hole this could've done the job in seconds. I'm fairly handy but this was my first attempt at cutting stainless steel or with a step drill bit. I tried to start a pilot hole with a 1/16 titanium drill bit but was only successful at creating a little dent before it got obvious it was starting to get hot. I read reviews saying be careful about denting or heating SS so it doesn't work harden so I stopped. The little dent the 1/16 bit made was plenty to get started and keep the step drill bit on target. Used Tap Magic cutting fluid and followed advice to press hard and start slow. The bit dug right in and I had a small hole in just a few seconds. Every 30 seconds or so I stopped, checked my progress, wiped excess oil and metal and added fresh oil. As the hole got bigger the bit got stuck a few times. I had to go in with a little bit of speed to get the bit to spin without getting stuck once the hole got big enough. Had some smoke and hot pieces of smoking metal coming off the bit when I increased the speed . . . glad I did this when the wife wasn't home or I'm sure she would've stopped me and we'd be waiting for a plumber to finish the last 2 minutes of this job. The hole's not 100% perfect but it's decent and since it's covered by a gasket it works just fine for my needs. The bit shows a fair amount of wear, probably from going a little too fast, but at $10 I can buy a new one for every hole I make and still save a fortune even as a one-time-use tool.

Excellent - I'd give it 6 stars if I could
I'm not a professional carpenter but I always seem to be building and fixing things just the same. I have owned various tools, drills and drill bits over the years yet somehow I had never heard of a "step" drill bit. Where have I been? A need came about where I had to widen the diameter of some pre-existing 1/2" holes I had drilled in 20/24 gauge steel. These holes were being placed in the back walls of a Tennesco metal office drawer ( B0057NFQWM ) - the back wall and the back of the drawer. So I attach this Neiko Titaniaum Step Drill bit to my Ryobi 9.6V cordless drill and to my amazement it quickly & effortlessly removes all the "slag" left over from the initial drilling attempt. It then widens the holes very quickly in progressively larger increments as I press the drill harder and just persist for a minute of drilling. I am impressed! This * EXACTLY * solved my installation problem. The fact that it does it's job so quickly and cleanly and I don't have to do any metal filing cleanup work made my day. It does not warp the metal either. Yes, it throws curlicue metal shavings around but that's a given. Easier to clean those up than the micro-fine metal filings from a conventional drill bit. TIP1: Since I started with a pre-existing pilot hole I cannot speak to whether this will work without a pilot hole. I suspect it would be * wise * to have * some * kind of basic pilot hole - even if it's 1/16 inch. TIP2: I did not use any lubricant's on the bit, but in retrospect, for the sake of bit longevity, it probably would have been a good idea. NOTE: My 9.6V cordless drill balked at doing the last two (widest opening) "steppings" but rather than getting out the electric powered drill, I said "good enough" at that point. The holes I had created were more than wide enough to feed Ethernet cables w/jacks through or 14/3 SJT cord - with a fair amount of remaining "slack" space. Highly recommended if you need to make clean holes in 20 to 24 gauge sheet metal.

Excellent performance for the $
This Neiko 10193A Titanium Step Dril Bit Set was a pleasant surprise! It was about one-fourth the cost of similar, better-known brand-name sets at the big box store, yet it worked perfectly well for my needs. I did not try the two smaller bits, but I used the largest step bit to drill ten 3/4" holes in 1/2" thick stainless flat bar to make backing plates for my boat's outboard engine bracket. Combined with the use of a good cutting fluid and a slow drilling speed (250 rpm), they steadily cut away the metal and resulted in very nicely cut holes. Because of the design of the bit, it even chamfered the edges of the holes nicely by just lowering the bit a tiny bit deeper to the next step up cutting size. Because the thickness of the steel was half-inch, I had to flip the bar to drill from the backside to finish each hole, as the depth of the 3/4" cutting "step" is less than 1/2" . No big deal. Worked great! For occasional or one-time use like this, these are IDEAL! You save a fortune and they cut great. I haven't tried the more expensive brand name bits, but I can't imagine they cut much better--certainly not four times better to justify their cost. If I had a lot of holes to drill in heavy materials, I'd probably just buy multiples of this set.

Works great and worked good on metal sheets for roofs. Handy tool when you need it.
The drill bit worked great and made getting rid of the burrs on my metal roof easy when replacing all the screws. Hard to see when to stop when using a hand held drill , so easy to make it too big if not careful. Good tool to have in your tool box.

Nice set of bits
Step bits make drilling out larger holes so easy! Case is sturdy enough. Can't beat these for the price.

I tessted this on a piece of three eight flat bar it cut through easy enough with a little cutting compound J managed to cut a hole the full diameter of the step bit great piece of kit.
