Great characterisation, excellent villains, a genuine sense of danger - sustained fast pace. almost breathless at times, no time to get bored. If you love London, you'll enjoy the spits and taints and the novel's various locations. Beautifully written - a great story-teller at work. A brilliant adventure story which might get boys reading as well as girls. Would make a great film. I felt there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end of it ( it's part of a trilogy but this one is loooooong - I felt I was owed a bit more).It's competent writing but is lacked passion is what I feel. I felt I was skating over the surface of soemthing that could have had a lot more depth.I would recommend it for 11+ and I know people who have really loved it so maybe I'm beign a bit unfair and my mind wasn't in the right place but, you know, it's no Harry Potter. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Somewhat bloated *by M***G on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 October 2016* It's got a decent idea at the bottom of it all but for me this was a book that really was stuck in one predictable note all the way through and then whipped through the resolution of the main crisis facing our heroes in a very perfunctory fashion.
