Time to revisit this Grateful Dead studio album! โ๐ป
I am really enjoying this studio remaster! As a major Dead fan most of these songs have long been in the Deadโs live set and have become live classics. This is the Deadโs most produced album and has the โDiscoโ Dead version of Dancing In The Street. As a bonus tract you get live version also from Cornell. Also a few studio outtakes and an unreleased song Equinox. This is the version of this album you need, Rhino steps up!

An Ordinarily Different Album Just Got Better
When The Grateful Dead switched to Arista Records in 1977, the band had decide to take a different, but somewhat unexpected path in their music by the time this rec- ording came out that same year Released at a time when rock changed its dynamic tune to a more realistic and commercialized sound without ever missing itโs powerful beat, Terrapin Station was met with mixed results, where Unlike there classic albums The Dead had recorded for Warner Brosโ and Atlantic (under their own private label), they managed to add an occasional brief dash of disco as they have maintained their original merit, which didnโt sit well with some Deadheads who have claimed the band hit a sour note, while many fans and admirers alike thought it was overproduced and did not keep up with The Deadโs more unpolished free form style, but The Dead had openly stated that they would always stay true to their musical art no matter what the odds were. As the title track set is featured in itโs extended suite format, it starts with the reggae-funk backed opening track Estimated Prophet and it is well proceeded on a disco-rock reindition on Dancing In The Streets and Samson And Delilah, while the expanded edition include Catfish John, a Bob Dylan folk favourite titled Peggy-O and the instrumental hit The Ascent where the extended edition give the CD (and MP3) a better and almost satisfying sound. Terrapin Station had mark several milestones for the band: it was their first studio album in two years, return to a major label and even a new sound, even though The Grateful Dead denounced โselling outโ as a naughty word. Long obscure since itโs release, it deserves a second chance.

2024 Vinyl release
Vinyl is quiet with no marks or warping. I don't have the original to compare to, but this mix seems a bit bass heavy. I had to lower the bass a small amount, but otherwise sounds great. On first listen, I did recall how after Estimated, I would flip for side two. Probably others did/do this as well. Well worth the $25 especially since originals have gotten stupid expensive.

Terrapin Station not a bad place to hang
I admit I love history of languages and seeing those turtles on the cover of Terrapin Station playing banjo and tambourine respectively reveals that little turtles were from the Algonquian for little turtle introduced into the English language around 1672. Just in case punters are wondering what the significance is of those wee turtles. Enough. Terrapin Station was in my opinion not a landmark album for the Grateful Dead. But it has its moments. It really is all about that title track. The story goes that Jerry Garcia had that cool effective riff and tune going around in his head and on a journey he was so sure of it, he turned his car around and went home to work on it. Meanwhile Garcia's lyrical cohort Robert Hunter was busy writing the lyrics for Terrapin Station. When they met up, magic as it does in the Dead camp happened and the song was born. Another effective pull comes in the shape of Phil Leish's Passenger with a riff obviously influenced from Fleetwood Mac's Station Man featured on their album Kiln House. And Bob Weir's treatment of the traditional Samson and Delilah is his worthy contribution to this album. The warm gem just has to be Donna Godchaux's vocal on her composition Sunrise written in memory of Grateful Dead's late roady Rex Jackson. Terrapin Station begins in cool, easy tones via the lovely Estimated Prophet. Of the bonus material included on this re-issue Catfish John is the standout. I was not a huge fan of this album upon original release, however it has stood the test of time and its appeal all these years later has surprised me and is rewarding.
