Review: Concise and complete for a beginner. - I think the sign of an expert teacher is someone that can take all their knowledge and concisely explain the most important parts in an organized way. That’s what I look for any time I’m allowing money to leave my bank account to pay for learning - and that’s what this book is. This book does a great job of being concise and walking you through a full setup from start to finish. Not too in depth and not too basic. I’ve never done a guitar setup but I’m patient and have some mechanical skill. I now have the best playing electric I’ve ever owned. Almost perfectly in tune across the entire neck. Amazing and fun to play for the first time. I’m no longer cringing when a note way up on the 17th fret is out of tune even though it’s in tune while player open. It sounds so amazing. I only own Fender style instruments and I appreciated that this book also explained the other styles of bridges and nuts so I know what I’m up against if I buy an Ibanez or Gibson. It also covered the basics of setting up an acoustic but doesn’t go into incredible detail on bridge work - doesn’t talk at all about how to lengthen or shorten the string length if you are having intonation issues on an acoustic. It does talk about adjusting the height of the bridge on an acoustic though. String length on an acoustic is way more complicated so that makes sense to skip it but an explanation as to why it was skipped or generally what needs to be accomplished would have been nice even if not fully explained.

Guitar setup
Nice book! It has lots of photos and looks easy to understand. Haven’t used it yet but looking forward to it. Book arrived in good condition.. The font is a bit smaller for me but not really an issue.

Awesome Guide for Beginners as advertised!
Sure, there is likely a YouTube video for how to set up your guitar, especially if you have one of the more ubiquitous models. This book is awesome because it iterates through lots of different cases, whereas most video instruction is for a particular model. For the price, this is perfect if you want to set up your own guitars. The step-by-step instructions are great, but the setup spec sheets and tables in the back are the best. Not that you couldn't do some Googling and then compile something like this on your own, but this book makes it very convenient to learn the process and concepts VERY quickly. After learning the basics from this book, I was able to set up my Peavy T-27 to my liking with a few hours of tinkering. This guitar is kind of an odd duck with smatterings of features from other guitars, plus a few of its own unique ones. Without the ease of access to the knowledge in this book, I would have really struggled with my typical "figuring it out on my own" mode. MIGHT have gotten to the same place, but I probably wouldn't have gotten nearly as much sleep that night!

Good book for basic guitar setups
Covering both electric and acoustic guitars, Jonny tells you how to set your guitar to play better. Perfection is not possible with a stringed and fretted instrument, but you can often make it better. Knowing this will help you learn how to better judge guitars before you buy them. You will also gain a better understanding about what your guitar tech does to make it plat better. If brave enough, you can do simple setups yourself. Well worth the money. Very clearly explained.

Just what you need to learn to set up your guitar
I bought this book a while ago now and used it to teach myself to set up my own guitars and basses. As a result, I started doing a few modifications and repairs and, in the process, bought a number of other books to help with those, many of which also covered setting up a guitar. I have to say that despite the quality of the other books I have purchased, this is the one I always have open on the bench when setting up a guitar as it is a quick easy reference to help remind me of a process or the way to do something. For me, it's an excellent book for a beginner, or as a reminder, and it does exactly what it says in the title; no more, but, importantly, no less!

My guitars are better than NEW now!!!
This book is outstanding, but it's an even better experience to attend one of the Blackwood Guitarworks classes in person - google them and find a class near you. Buy the book first though - it will help you in class. Excellent instruction!

An indispensable resource for guitar maintenance.
I have always dreaded and hated the idea of doing guitar set up. It’s seemed to me a tricky and overly delicate process. I just didn’t want to. Much like a petulant child having a bit of a tantrum over something they just didn’t want to do. However as cost of living is rising, the luxury at paying a person isn’t so easy any more. And my son and I have six guitars between us…. Johnny Blackwoods book has been eye opening to the process. It’s not as tricky as it would first appear to be. And after my first read through things began to clear up in the mystery of the luthiers arts. Simply put it’s mostly simple measurements and balance. And after FORTY plus years of playing I have NEVER done a string replacement as tidy and as well intonated and pitch correct as this one. The book can seem a little daunting. But with any new skill, follow the guides, and practice and persevere and you’ll nail it soon enough. I did. And you have to admit, those string windings do look like very pretty stacks of coins…. A fantastic tome, and worth every penny spent on it. It’ll pay for itself in saved set up costs. One, at my current guys costs. BUY THIS BOOK.
