How do i know the exact fan? only thing i see is i have an hp pavillion and it looks like a b&o on top right on keyboard.or should i just disassemble

I purchased the wrong fan first, so be sure your model number is in the list of models the fan is supposed to fit. I took my notebook apart to put in the wrong fan I first purchased and saw that it would not fit, so I put the notebook back together and purchased the correct fan. Interesting, the correct fan is on the shelf because after being removed and replaced, the original fan has not failed, except for one morning. I suspect that the connector for the fan is prone to becoming disconnected.

Is there a list of compatible laptops?

Not that I know of, I used the number on the sticker to order the replacement. HP tends to put an additional sticker on a product if things change such as the stocking or replacements available, haven't figured out if that applies to stock on the shelf and the original part has been previously replaced.
