Fantastic
In a word: unbelievable. Having been used to fairly powerful desktop machines and having little interest in gaming this seemed like a worthy option when I was looking to upgrade. The Surface Pro 4 (Core i5/4GB/128GB) is a highly capable alternative to desktop machines while also bringing the advantages of tablets and laptops. As a maths teacher there are so many excellent tools which have made my life much easier than it used to be, although I do also have an Office 365 subscription to enable many of these features. I use a lot of spreadsheets and this handles them easily, although the lack of a dedicated number pad is a minor gripe I don't do a great deal of number input. As much as I despise the way Word handles the positioning of text and objects, the ability to handwrite mathematical formulae and have it converted into an object is fantastic, particularly with my less than great writing. The fluid integration of the pen input combined with the normal office applications is something I miss every time I have to use another machine. - I have actually gone to touch normal monitor screens since getting so used to this, which does make me feel stupid, but also highlights how useful the feature is. The simple switch between laptop and tablet modes (with the not-included text cover, which is surprisingly great given its size) is excellent, with Windows 10 more than holding its own. Laptop mode is exactly what you expect with the addition of touch screen and pen input, and tablet mode is incredibly pleasing given the past few years of iPad usage. The freedom of a fully fledged version of Windows is amazing when compared to the very limiting iOS and it's apps, which while many work fine, it feels so limited compared to this. I also use the miniDP connection with my 4K monitor and the whole experience is similar to a normal desktop, the Surface Pro 4 is again very capable in this regard. On a similar note the display of the Surface Pro 4 is fantastic, so unbelievably sharp and crisp. The kickstand is great, offering a brilliant solution to the problem that has plagued every tablet so far but also solving the problem of how to make the laptop aspect work without a heavy base to balance. The type cover is excellent with the typing experience being great and it doesn't feel compromised at all. The magnetic connection is great, making connecting the type cover so easy and it simply folds over to protect the screen when required. The pen is great, with the nib being very good and the display (particularly OneNote) being very responsive, the top button is very useful for the shortcuts to OneNote, screenshots and so on. The power connection is easy to attach and doesn't easily detach, taking a couple of hours to fully charge the battery. Battery life so far has been good, although a little short on occasion it is again one of the compromises you make. The single USB3.0 port is the only annoyance I have so far, and it is a compromise I can live with, although the one USB port for charging stuff is a nice touch. The price tag is high sure, but for me worth every bit. You get a premium product with some brilliant features. I spent a long time considering various MacBooks of a similar price to this and after much deliberation I am so incredibly happy with the choice I made. The type cover should be included however.

Brilliant device...until...
I bought the highest spec Surface Pro 4 (with the exception of only 512GB, not the 1TB version) and I absolutely loved it. It is an incredibly fast machine and runs programs such as Photoshop and AutoCAD easily. The touchscreen, pen, keyboard etc were all aspects I loved about it, and that it ran full Windows. However, I had to return it within a few months as there were just too many things going wrong with it and I was worried that beyond the warranty period, I'd be stuck with a £1,600 machine that didn't run well. The problems I had: 1. The touch screen stopped working on occasion and would often need restarted several times (even though it was up to date software). 2. It made 2 different mini SD cards unreadable, or RAW, and I lost all the data (thankfully I had backups). 3. The pen would disconnect quite often, requiring pairing each time I turned it on. Other times it would work instantly. 4. The battery life. I knew it wouldn't be as Microsoft stated (something like up to 9 hours), but on average I got maybe 2 hours max, even if I was just browsing the web or playing music through earphones. 5. The battery, which was when I decided to return it. After only 5 months, the battery would not charge fully and would only function when plugged in...not so useful for portability and that the plug is magnetic so could easily be pulled out by accident, shutting the surface down. I tried everything but I was told the battery needed replaced...so I just wanted to return it, because if this happened outwith the warranty period I'd be screwed, and stuck with an expensive device that wasn't able to be used as it was intended. 6. There were also other more trivial problems but I won't create an endless list. I would have given it 5 stars had these problems not arisen. I was really disappointing that I had to in the end because when it worked, it was a brilliant device. Unfortunately I have to give it 1 star because the problems I encountered. Was hoping to eventually get a Surface Studio but my experience with Microsoft hardware (Windows phone, Surface Pro 4) hasn't been great so far - I've ended up returning both devices.
