Does the toaster fit wide slices of bread

Yes thick bread eg the thickness of 2 slices of sandwich bread put in together. The width of the slot is the regular slot width size..

Brown toast burns on dial 1 - is this normal for this toaster?

No certainly not!! Usually dial number 3 or 4 for brown toast

What is the wattage says 1800 more than double any of the others I have looked at.

On base of toaster, wattage is 850 w. The toast browns sufficiently on regulator dial 1.

I have just tested the Toaster in order to give you the correct answer. The Outer Case of the toaster remains perfectly cool whilst using the toaster. But the Metal Inner part where the toast is gets quite hot. So you need to be careful when getting the toast out!!
