I use them on my hiking shoes and everything!2 things though... It's really easy to accidentally over tighten... Obviously if your foot starts to hurt you can just loosen them and make adjustments... But just be aware of this if you're putting them on someone else, especially if maybe they can't easily communicate to you the problem.Second... The ends, with the hard plastic bits, are pretty wide. So if the lace holes on your shoes are small or oval... They allow you to take off your shoe as if it were a slip on type shoe. You can easily put your foot in the shoe without having to undo laces. They hug your foot all around so you don't need to use the heel lock hole on the shoe. The best way for me to lace shoes for the first time is as follows: Put the laces in the two holes of the shoe that is farthest away from your ankle. Then slip your foot into your shoe. Continue to lace and snug the remainder of the holes until you reach the top of the shoe. I've inserted a photo showing the laces without lacing the heel lock. They stay snug all day, then I can slip them off at the end of the day.
