The weights are great! They fit into your hand well and are easy to manipulate during various exercises. The material the weights are wrapped in is slip-resistant and comfortable to hold on to.I used the mat for a while during my workouts, but eventually decided it wasn't really adding anything to the experience and I could just as easily put a bath towel down on my living room rug in order to protect the rug. If you are working out on a hard surface without a rug or carpet, you may find the mat to be far more useful than I did (although it is fairly thin, so it doesn't provide much cushioning). On another note, if you tend to slip easily or have slippery workout shoes (which you should remedy), this mat may give you added traction. For someone looking for a mat to use on hardwood floors it would probably not offer the cushion needed to make a comfortable workout. I also notice it helps while doing crunches, my tailbone usually hurts while I am on the floor doing them, but with this mat the discomfort is gone. The weights are a nice size and easy for me to hold with the textured feel and also small enough to keep a good grasp with my smaller hands.
