Review: A great book for anyone interested in Engineering. - This book is good to have lying around, so you can pick it up when you have a spare moment. The drawings and short descriptions make it nice and easy to dip in and out of. It is surprising how many of these movements are still used today around the house! Review: Toilet reading for engineers! - I like the way the mechanisms have been curated: each page spread features a set of related mechanisms, grid of numbered schematic pictures on the left, accompanying descriptions on the right, arranged generally in increasing complexity and subtlety for performing a particular task. This arrangement partially represents a chronological evolution of solutions to the task, and also parallel solutions independently arrived at or specifically aimed at a niche; but it is largely up to you to imagine this as it is only a thin book covering a lot of mechanisms, and to pontificate about each would make it run to many volumes. The illustrations and descriptions are a very concise top-level overview - just enough to let you know that "this is a thing", and if you look and read and understand you can begin to animate them in your mind and maybe even hear the sounds they make! Easy to dip in at any page spread and immerse yourself in a set, then put it down again.

It's a good book, however, in this instance Amazon quality control needs some improvement.
The contents of the book is what I was looking for, however the book arrived with a rip on the front cover which is very disapointing.

Just what I wanted

An intriguing book of curiosities to dip into.
I never knew there were so many ways to convert between linear linear and circular motion. I would not pay a lot for this but at the price it is being sold at it is well worth it.

Honey I shrunk the kids!
What happened? This is the third time in the past 16 years I've bought this book. The ingenious engineering is amazing. But why, oh why is the book now so small? It used to be around A4 size pages. Nice size diagrams and print size where you can clearly see the mechanisms and figure out how they work. The book is now much smaller. 'Pinch to zoom in' doesn't work on paper. I naturally thought I was buying the same book again, didn't check the size.

It advertises 507 mechanical movements but the only mechanical movement this book makes is the turning of pages, 0/10 Jokes aside, all of the information on this book is available for free on the web as it is a public domain title, but if you are a fan of physical copies such as I, this softcover will serve you very well. It is affordable, the printing quality is authentic to the originals, and it solidly built. Overall, a good addition to any bookshelf. As for the contents, if you're one who upon understanding how a simple, ingenious solutions to a problem works opens up a wide, wonderment-full smile, this book is very much for you.

Each page has the diagram and description of a mechanism and what it does or could be used for. Short entries, PERFECT for bathroom visits.

I like the various movement illustrations. The description given for each is very short and that's the reason 500+ illustrations could be fitted in this book. The book is definitely an "ok" reprint and slightly obfuscated at places because of OCR scan on typewriter font didn't go well for this one. Eventually, if one has a knack for crafting things that move, this book can offer ideas. With a 3D printer, one can actually assemble most of these movement designs at home. Definitely a recommend for the tinkerers and curious folks.
