if the cutout starts to go, get a new thermostat
This was originally advertised as a Backer BT7. Now you get a Backer BT765 which doesen't insert so far into the heater but still seems to work. As far as I can see there is no thermal cutout within the BT765 and you are relying on separate cutouts in the heater. They seem to last about two years or so and if the thermal cutout starts to go, don't waste time resetting it more than once, immediately fit a new thermostat (keep one spare)

Misleading photo of product
It arrived very quickly. But it didn't look like the photo on Amazon, which matched the one I was looking to replace. I assume this is because it is a more up to date version of the same model, as it had the same model number, but I found this very misleading. In the end, we didn't need to replace the thermostat, but have kept it as a spare, so I can't comment on if it works or not.

Most common fault on an immersion heated is a failed thermostat.
This Backer thermostat has a tapered point - what that means is it can fit most immersion heaters. I've bought three of these over the years - if a thermostat lasts about two years that is good value for money considering they are mass produced and subject to 3kw load. The third one I bought I'm still keeping as a spare years after I fitted number two. A plumber will tell you you need a new element - always try a new thermostat first, a new thermostat might cost you about £20 but you can but an element and thermostat as a unit for about £26.
