This wouldn't really have been a problem but I couldn't find any kind of indicator as to which way the battery is supposed to be inserted. There are no markings indicating positive or negative and even the method of negative end towards the spring doesn't apply since there are 2 springs! The higher powered battery must have fried a connection somewhere.
