I started putting gravel on top of the dirt, but when it rains hard, or you have to transplant the original plant, you're headed right back to the garden store. So, these small rocks.First of all, they're pretty. They're polished to a sheen, so they're retain their color. And they're not flat like most river rocks; they're round, like pebbles. The natural sand and brown colors look really nice with plants. Although they don't look like much in the plastic bag in which they're shipped, 2.5 pounds actually goes a long way; so I can cover the dirt in a few small pots, one large pots, or fill in the color of our water feature. And the rocks are large enough that if I have to transplant something, they're easy to pick up; it's not like I have to get out a sieve, try to pick out the pieces of gravel, and then give up. I can just pick out the covering rocks, transplant the plant, and put the rocks on top.I'm not sure I will ever defeat the squirrels, but at least I will give them, and me, some variety, and I really like how these look.
