Review: Raw beginner. - As I enter my 7th decade I thought I would learn something new after finding my daughter's old school recorder in a drawer. I cannot read music nor can I play any musical instrument at all. So it's all Greek to me, as they say. I managed to identify the old recorder as an Aulos 205 Descant which I understand is still made in large quantities for schools and serves well as a beginner instrument. I really wanted to find a recorder teacher locally but it was not to be. So I thought I would start with simple book in a self-help mode. Please bear in mind that this review is written by someone with no experience of playing music whatsoever! I was pleased to find that this book by Brian Bonsor was a great help in starting out. Learning to read the notes as well as play them was what I wanted. Pictures of the finger positions are most useful and his use of both the English note names ' Crotchet' and the equivalent American 'Quarter-note' are valuable. I now have a teacher who is an accomplished musician, but not a recorder player per se, so the 'fingering' tips given by Brian Bonsor pointing out snags and common faults with the finger positions are very useful for practice. I have tried to practice 30 minutes per day and have succeeded most days. I was told that frequent practice is more effective than playing for a long time once a week. This follows the old adage that 1 hour's tuition need 4 hours practice! I bought the copy of this book as a 'used' book so it's condition is not new, hence the 4 stars. I don't know what use my review will be, but as an absolute beginner I am well pleased so far as it has got me off to a good start.
