To make it accessible to all readers, the book has several expositional conversations, and even Mayberry's considerable talents can't keep them from slowing the story. My minor problem is that there are some phrases that seem out of place: would a woman of 1871 really respond to a comment with "My ass"? With those points out of the way, everything else about this is fun. On display here are dastardly villains, a you-are-there desert setting (a bit reminiscent, in a good way, of The Dark Tower), brave heroes (Looks Away is a crackup), a spunky heroine, an endless variety of beasts and monsters, and wild inventions based on the mysterious "ghost rock" exposed by the great earthquake of 1868. Historical figures occasionally pop up to ground the fantastic elements just a bit. The reader will also encounter vivid battle scenes, an airship (of course there's an airship), a horde of zombies, and too many other delights to mention. The story moves quickly when not in exposition mode, there's a new danger or terror around every corner of an underground maze, and there's a nice twist to the supernatural past following gunfighter Grey Torrance everywhere he goes. So hitch up your gunbelt, saddle your horse, and ride into the weirdest Western tale I've ever read. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Weird Wonderful West *by L***S on Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017* Deadlands: Ghostwalkers is a fantastic book. From beginning to end I was hooked. I picked up Ghostwalkers shortly after getting into the Roleplaying Game it was based on, but I can safety say that any knowledge from the game is not required to find this story entertaining.The pace is riveting, and I found myself unable to put the book away without reading "Just one more chapter" several times. Its pace reminds me of that of a Netflix series: each chapter ending in a way that begs, demands, you continued to see how the situation is resolved.The characters are simply wonderful. From the beginning Grey sets himself up as a rough-and-tumble, gruff protagonists while also establishing his hidden heroic side; but Grey Torrence doesn't carry the story alone. His companions, the snarky and intelligent Thomas Looks Away, an exiled Sioux with a "peculiar" accent and the fiery and brave Jenny Pearl, a farm girl with a score to settle with the villain. Each of the three shine in serial scenes and their bond feels real as it grows throughout the tale. Though not as focal, the other players in the story, such as Father Joe, are not left out when it comes to characterization.If I had to point out a flaw, the only one that I can call to mind is authors frequent use of repetition, often repeating words. Likely for emphasis; but this doesn't detract from the story as a whole.While you do not need to have fore knowledge of the Deadlands universe to enjoy this book, those with such knowledge will undoubtedly find themselves elated to see references to things from the game and similar connections. Overall this book makes a great addition to the library of anyone who enjoys Deadlands, or even just anyone who enjoys a good weird west tale, hell, even for anyone who enjoys a good adventure. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Eh, SO-SO *by F***1 on Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2018* First Deadlands novel for me. The premise of the whole universe is what initially attracted me to this book, and indeed there were some unique concepts that were vary interesting - no I won't spoiler things.Overall though, turned into a bit of a slog towards the end, and the protagonists were not very likeable or engaging.
