Product description CD: Weezer,Pinkerton desertcart.co.uk A hit single can be a bit of a mixed blessing for new bands, especially if said song gets you firmly lumped into the "novelty band" category. Such was the case with Weezer, whose runaway hit "Buddy Holly" touched a global nerve upon its release, then got on everyone's nerves after months of radio saturation. However, it did ensure that they sold millions of copies of their self-titled debut. Which is why it's so strange that their second album, Pinkerton, was soundly ignored. Perhaps it was down to that album's wilfully non-commercial first single, "El Scorcho", which crashed and burned out of the charts at a rate of speed usually reserved for the likes of Gary Barlow. Whatever the reason, Pinkerton soon disappeared without a trace, which is a shame because it's actually a great album. Whereas Weezer had the band revelling in their geek rock image, Pinkerton saw singer / songwriter Rivers Cuomo maturing as a lyricist: From opening track "Tired Of Sex", which rants about the frustrating easiness of groupies, to the New Wave pop of "Getchoo", to the sheer, unadulterated epic genius of "The Good Life", the songs are much more diverse than the Pixies-influenced bouncey grunge of their debut. With the closing solo acoustic lament of "Butterfly", Rivers Cuomo hints at his mastery of the pop song as an art form, suggesting great things from this reformed geek in the future. --Robert Burrow Review: Dark days make for superb songs - Now considered by many fans and critics alike to be the high-water mark of Weeer's musical career, 'Pinkerton' was met with a lukewarm response upon release, due to the deeply personal nature of many of Cuomo's songs, the emotive vocals, and the darker, heavier sound of the album, which was a notable departure from the sunny, often surf-rock influenced melodies of 'The Blue Album'. Listening through the album for what must be the hundreth time, it's hard to find anything bad to say about 'Pinkerton'. The album has a wealth of absolutely brilliant songs, from the troubled laments of 'Why Bother?' and 'Pink Triangle' to the perfectly pitched scared-but-horny, punkish rock of 'Falling For You' and 'Across the Sea'. The lyrics feel both personal and relevant, the music is tight, powerful and memorable and everything falls perfectly into place for the quiet, restrained closer that is 'Butterfly'. As others have said, 'Pinkerton' isn't an album which reveals its brilliance on first listen. In both music and mood, it's markedly different to any other Weezer release, meaning the first few listens, whilst enjoyable, are a bit of an acclimatising period. For fans of later Weezer, looking to discover their earlier work, you'll likely be surprised and rewarded by the depth and harsh beauty of 'Pinkerton', and for those just looking for an honest, inventive alternative rock record; this is it. If I had to choose one album to listen for the rest of my life, I'd struggle to find anything more worthwhile and continually inspiring than this album. Review: Great album, great CD. - Not much more to say than that the CD was a well packaged high quality version of one of my favourite Weezer albums, bought as gift for a friend - it's a very good CD.

Dark days make for superb songs
Now considered by many fans and critics alike to be the high-water mark of Weeer's musical career, 'Pinkerton' was met with a lukewarm response upon release, due to the deeply personal nature of many of Cuomo's songs, the emotive vocals, and the darker, heavier sound of the album, which was a notable departure from the sunny, often surf-rock influenced melodies of 'The Blue Album'. Great album, great CD.
Not much more to say than that the CD was a well packaged high quality version of one of my favourite Weezer albums, bought as gift for a friend - it's a very good CD.

... as a classic nineties album and I was not disappointed. The songs are dark
I'm not usually a fan of this genre of music in that I prefer either more hardcore punk and alternative music but I took a chance on what is generally regard as a classic nineties album and I was not disappointed. The songs are dark, introspective and deeply personal, but at the same time they possess great pop hooks that are catchy and memorable. Unlike many other commercial pop/rock bands of the late nineties the music is all substance rather than manufactured teen angst or radio friendly pop anthems and it's a shame that it never got the credit it should have done on it's release.

Career High
I don’t think Weezer have been or will ever be as good as they were on this album. After the almost fluffiness of the Blue one, this definitely caught me off guard with its gritty, sometimes downright grubby lyrics and frankly sometimes incel kinda vibe but look past that and the songs are all about that universal experience, about finding love, whether it be the unrequited, inappropriate or the absolutely hopeless kind. It’s marvellous. Play it loud.

Wow!!
Well I didn't expect this! For someone who rates the Blue Album extremely highly, I was surprised to find myself prefering Pinkerton over their debut album, but I really do! Pinkerton has a much rockier sound than the Blue Album, which I prefer, and the drumming in particular is fantastic. There isn't a weak track, but standouts include The Good Life, Across the Sea, Tired of Sex and the closer Butterfly. I really don't understand why this album wasn't better received when it was first released. Highly recommended.

Brilliant, but VINYL DOES NOT contain TWO discs as described
Love this album and have owned it on CD for years. Saw this vinyl was available and was intrigued to see it had listings for two discs! I contacted Amazon to confirm this was the case (they confirmed it was), but the item only contained one disc. The MP3 version (which comes along with the Vinyl purchase) does contain the second disc with extras, but just be aware that with the vinyl, you're only getting one disc.
