It's far from hard-shell, but pretty firm. I have a standard size digital camera with a medium telephoto lens, and it fits easily in the case, with room to spare. In fact, it can bounce around inside, which may be a problem. But my big complaint is entirely my fault for not studying the photos and description well enough. I assumed, without properly checking, that it would have a pocket or two for things like a spare battery and the little charger, and the USB cord. But no such luck. All it has is one TINY little pocket that will fit one or two little memory cards. It would have been so easy for them to just add a smallish outside pocket that could be used to keep all the accessories together: a couple spare batteries, charger, USB cable, a couple screw-on filters, maybe even the camera strap. Such a pocket would have made this case so much better. So now if I travel with this camera, I need a separate case to carry all of its accessories. How silly. Oh well.
