Reliable, Durable, and Perfect for Everyday Use!
Iβve owned this model before and decided to get another one because it always works great. The ADATA HD710 Pro is extremely durable β it even resists scratches when carried in my purse. As advertised, itβs waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof. The USB connector feels firm and secure, and the overall build quality is excellent. Great performance at a very competitive price. Highly recommend for anyone who needs reliable storage on the go!

Fast USB3 rugged drive with 1TB (1000GB) of storage for a great price - see speed tips
This drive is excellent (review includes speed tips). If the USB connector to the drive was a problem, it isn't any more. The metal connector is very wide and connects firmly. I've never seen the device connector so wide for a USB cable. I haven't tested any water/dust/shock proof features. I got it for the USB 3 speed connection and the size upgrade from my WD 250G external HDD. The transfer speeds are fast, but I found that they vary widely depending on the data. If you are transferring mostly fewer large files, like 1 hour HD videos for example - the transfer speed is the fastest. This is because the read/write process is doing less overhead and just copying data. Also, those files tend to be more contiguous on the source drive. Fragmenting is the big issue with the copy speed. My newer bigger folders with larger files transferred faster than folders that have had smaller files accumulated and modified over the last 5 years (5 y/o windows7 pc). There is an easy fix without defragmenting the entire hard drive of the source computer. If you have enough space, just make a new copy of the more fragmented folders (do not delete the old folder yet so they copy to a newer contiguous block of the PC HDD or those files will be written right back to the older more fragmented locations that are freed up - just leave the original folder for a backup or delete it just before you are ready to defrag the entire drive). After making a copy of my older fragmented folder - the transfer speeds to the external drive was about 10x faster - literally. The transfer speed for a 10GB folder of video files was actually faster than it was taking for a folder with 2GB of 1000's of older smaller files until I made a new copy of that folder. This is going to be true of any external drive file copy. All else being equal, the USB3 connection only speeds up the transfer rate if that was where the bottle neck speed was - but it can be the read/write processes and speeds that are slower, not the USB connection (at least for a USB2 and above). The drive is about the same size as my older Western Digital 250GB extHDD (1/4th of the storage capacity) - as far as the metal part without the rubber cover. I really like that the rubber cover holds the cable securely in place. The metal connector is a lot bigger and wider than the connector for my older one. There was no data or apps on the drive. It arrives clean with all space available and ready to copy files to. The downloadable app is optional if you want some automated backup processing (which I would never use, so I'm glad it's an optional download).

I have found this external to be very useful. I am by no means gentle with my electronics, and by nature I am very clumsy and that leads to carelessness with devices such as these. Thus, durability is the quality that I find the most important, and this product has held up to my standards (which I think says a lot because often my standards can be impossible to meet -- I'd like to be able to throw electronics at a brick wall and know they'll be safe...) I am a scientist and have to keep backups of my data regularly, and the hard drive that I am provided with at work looks and feels very fragile, to say the least. I bought this almost two years ago on recommendation from a friend to use as a backup to my current work hard drive, and have had zero problems. I have ended up using this as my primary external as it is very easy to use and has a number of wonderful features. What I like the most is that the cord attaches to the hard drive itself, making it difficult to misplace and allowing for ease of transport. I can throw this in the pocket of my backpack and not worry about it. If you are looking for a durable hard drive and don't want to spend a ton of money on an SSD, this is it. As an amazon customer I constantly find myself reading the most critical reviews, and always wish that some other reviewer who liked the product would address those exact concerns, so I'd like to do that here. The main problem I can see in the critical reviews is that the cord can be faulty. I didn't experience any of the problems that the other reviewers have mentioned. This company has wonderful business practices, and I have seen them respond directly to these reviews and offer to supply a new hard drive under the warranty. Another issue I've read about is that it spontaneously stopped working. This is true of any brand of hard drive -- none are perfect and hard drives don't always last -- that is the nature of hard drives in general (and why it is smart to keep back ups of your back ups...). However, some brands have higher success than others. Knowing this, I did extensive research on all of the hard drives available on Amazon (and elsewhere) and think this stands up to the best and most expensive. All things considered, I think this hard drive is a safe bet and would recommend this to anyone looking for a durable, long lasting and easy to transport external hard drive.

Cheap But Slow - Good Enough at Very Low Cost Per TB
I have had a couple of these for a while now, and have had no issues with them. These are no name drives, meaning that they are probably just binned or overstock drives from one of the major manufacturers since only three companies still make old-school, physical hard drives now. But when you are backing up your data, redundancy is really what matters the most, and these are a very cheap way to gain additional redundancy. Upsides: Cheap per TB stored. Case is rubberized with a secure rubber cover for the USB port, meaning it can be made largely impervious to dirt, dust, and maybe even light rain. USB cord stores neatly around the drive when not in use, making it easier to transport. Downsides: These things are dog slow, so you will go nuts if you use these for constantly shuttling around large files regularly. I also can't really speak to the "ruggedized" internals, but at this price I assume it may not be much more than the thick rubber case, and in a world of SSDs, a spinning, mechanical hard drive is really not what you want in any kind of truly rough environment anyway. But fill them up once and then stick them in a drawer, or leave them with a friend for an off-site backup. They are very cheap, extra insurance for any data that doesn't need to be constantly changed and updated. Like any drive, they shouldn't be the only place you store data you care about, but, at least in my experience, they are good enough to be a cost-effective part of a larger backup plan.
