A brilliant record from an under-appreciated pianist.
On this album Phineas Newborn leads two trios. These are not "regular" groups but brought together for the puroses of recording only. The first trio features Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones from the then Miles Davis quintet, the second Sam Jones and Louis Hayes from Cannonball Adderley's quintet.Phineas has been compared to Art Tatum because he has the ability to play fast. He often received unfavourable criticism for this, and some of his music was regarded facile. He reacted badly to this criticism and fell into depression resulting in some lengthy stays in hospital. This means he is recorded less than he deserves. This treasure has a fine selection of tunes (none "originals") of varying pace and emotion. We have Gillespie's Latinesque "Manteca" and Strathorn's "Lush Life" along with tunes by Parker, Rollins, Silver and others. This album deserves to be much better known. I give it 4 stars simply because in the great world of jazz recordings there a few better. 4 stars is a great compliment. It is a delight to listen to, and a perfect showcase for one of jazz's greatest pianists.

A WORLD OF PIANO
This album now quite old is a classic for all jazz piano fans. It rates as a one of the finest ever recorded and should be a must for any collection.

Great recordings by rather forgotten genius
One of my favourite pianists and one of his findst sets of recordings. leaving aside a few 'clams' in the intro.to the otherwise magnificent 'Manteca', everything here is perfect, notably a version of 'Lush Life' which is the finest I have ever heard, by anyone.

Chef d'oeuvre !!
CD culte! A acquรฉrir !!

In the tradition of Tatum and Peterson
I've been a professional musician (drummer) for 46 years and a fan of many genres of music. Jazz is my favorite. Among my favorite jazz pianists, I have just added Phineas Newborn, Jr. By the way, he pronounced his name ("fine-us"). I had seen a video of him before and was impressed, but after listening to this CD I have placed him on the same level as Fats Waller. Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, in my favorites list. It's remarkable to me, and a shame, that he is not more widely recognized as one of the all time great jazz pianists of all time. If you like those musicians just mentioned, I highly recommend this CD as an introduction to Phineas Newborn, Jr's playing.Preston Ritter

World of piano is exactly right. Some spectacular players have been in the jazz ranks: Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson come immediately to mind when technical ability is mentioned. Phineas Newborn Jr. should be mentioned in the same breath.

The Awesome Phineas Newborn, Jr.
Phineas is without a doubt one of the greatest jazz pianist of all times. This is a must have for the true jazz lover! Phineas mixes unbelievable technique with an innate since of melody and affinity for the blues which put him in a league of his own. Oscar Petterson is the closest to the Phineas type of mastery, but It would be had to say which one I like best. Wow, what a talent!Jeff

Phineas Newborn JR.
There is Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum.Phineas Newborn Jr. is every bit the "must hear" pianist that those previously mentioned two are.Even "College Bob", the Mardi Gras drummer would agree with me. (Isn't that right, Bob?)Anyway, Phineas is highly recommended.

As good as it gets
This may be the best CD of Phineas Newborn around. My favorites are a lightning fast version of Charlie Parker's Cheryl, Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca, and a lovely take on Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life which starts with an extensive portion of Ravel's Sonatine. You must also check out his Oleo.

Phineas' Finest
The masterful Memphis piano legend in the company of fellow musical giants, playing a set of strong compositions, recorded beautifully at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1961. This CD is a must have for lovers of modern jazz, and music lovers in general!
