Hi, Just em!No, it isn't a necessity to use the part with the holes, but saying that, this part is really what the tray is all about; it 'sieves' the used cat litter that becomes sawdust once your cat has pee'd on it, so the litter can last longer (as long as you remove the poo). So it might be better (and cheaper!) just to buy a large, covered litter tray.

Looking at this for a britsh shorthair. is this large enough andnalso suitable from kitten to adult bsh cat.

It is easily large enough for my two 7kg BSH cats. But the lip at the front might be a bit of a leap for a kitten though you could put something in front temporarily as a step for the kitten. You won’t regret buying this litter box - it works brilliantly and is really well made.
