## Description

Dreaded warrior Manji (Takuya Kimura) failed to protect his younger sister Machi (Hana Sugisaka) from a pack of rivals... and as he lay dying after taking his vengeance, he was cursed with regenerative powers and immortality. Half a century later, all he sought was redemption and eternal rest, and believed he might find both in aiding an orphaned girl (also Sugisaka)-the image of Machi-in gaining revenge on her family's killers. Takashi Miike's electric adaptation of the popular manga co-stars Sôta Fukushi, Hayato Ichihara. 140 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Japanese; Subtitles: English. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Review: Q: What happens if you're not the most awesome warrior but you're immortal? - A: Watch this and find out. This movie was good but it did not quite compare to some of the awesome action both martial and swordplay we see in other films both past and present. However, I am giving it 5* for 2 main reasons. Firstly, it is different and it executes well. The combats are all different, showing a bunch of different styles, enemies and weapons. They don't overdo "magic" (beyond the 'obvious' main story) tho you get the feeling it's there, which is how I prefer it, it makes it *feel* more historically possible even if it's not. Secondly, the current rating is 4.5* which I think is accurate. Usually I will not bother to review movies with ratings I agree with but every once in a while a movie is good enough I am motivated to vote it higher so it has more a chance to retain that rating. This is the latter. The acting is also very good, I felt for the characters even many of the bad guys and both of the younglings. There's some minor twisting as well which keeps you interested until the end, and probably room for a sequel.
Review: 15+ years of story minus about 10 years squeezed into a 2.5 hour movie. - A very admirable and earnest adaptation of an incredible manga. I started reading the manga when it was first published as a full-size comic book by Dark Horse around 1996 all the way til it's end run a few years ago. I always thought a live-action adaptation would be impossible due to the ultra-violence, complexity of characters and, ofcourse, the sheer length. I guess i shouldn't be surprised that the legendary Takashi Miike would find a way to adapt it. I won't get too into the story and what/who was cut out because it's pointless to talk about in an adaptation like this. The important thing is that it got the point across. Overall, i found the movie very good. The costumes and weapons are spot on perfect. Most of the casting looks just like the manga (in particular Shira, Anotsu, and Magatsu) and the fight choreography is accurate right down to the story panels and the characters' classic poses and mannerisms. Manji didn't quite look like i imagined him but his portrayal was excellent. He had ALL the same mannerisms and even struck the same iconic poses throughout the movie. The attention to detail and being faithful to the characters was very much appreciated. Although this is a very bloody and violent movie, it still does not reach the sheer artistic and beautiful bloodbath of the manga. i guess trying to replicate crazy splash page death scenes w/ CGI would look awful so for that i am very thankful. Highly recommended to any chanbara fans. You will probably enjoy it more if you have never read the manga before. Now if only someone would do a true faithful adaptation as a 4-5 season series...
