RHS Essential Pruning and Training (RHS) Review: Almost essential - If you are in any way interested in pruning, topiary, espalier or any other tree-shaping approach, this book will be of immense benefit. It is arranged topically by plant type: fruiting trees is one part, for example. Within each area are instructions for shaping the plant in various ways - fan training, bush pruning, cordoning, planching, what ever. Each set of instructions is comprehensively illustrated, with very useful diagrams showing where to cut at planting, one year, two years and so forth. It is very explicit, and even the novice (as I was when I purchased this some years back) can hope to make a good first attempt at his chosen tree form. This book's usefulness is perhaps well illustrated by the fact that several friends have borrowed it from me and also found it helpful; I have generally had to pursue them to get it back! Review: You need this book. - Great resource, used for field reference and crew training (ISA certified Arborist.)

Great way to learn
GREAT first book for a beginner gardener. There are more than just plants and the way we cut them will affect them. This book covers that and other important and interesting facts. A must for ever beginner.

Tree care persented well
If you are going to have shrubs and trees on a property and want to maintain them nicely, this is the book. Extensive photos, clear instructions and the reasoning behind the methods make this a very nice guide. Sometimes it is hard to make that first cut, but pruning is a necessary part of the garden to be maintained.

This is the best reference book about all kinds of pruning. Great explanations and pictures! All the books I have had over the years from RHS have been super. The book came 2 weeks earlier than anticipated. It had a little wear and tear on the cover, but it was a very good price for this book. As long as I can read it, I can live with a few dings.

I bought this 2nd hand, and didn't go for the most recent edition, as they were much more expensive. Am not sure how much this has been updated since this edition, and how much I've missed by going for an older edition, but this provides a huge range of info on pruning and training. There's a general section on plant growth, then on pruning techniques, both maintenance and renovation pruning, for each type of plant, so shrubs, trees, climbers etc with detailed pictures showing where and how to cut. Then there's an alphabetical section listing pruning info for each individual plant, with a special section on fruit trees, and step-by-step instructions for different projects, such wall-training shrubs or climbers, creating standards, multiple stemmed trees etc, again with clear pictures and diagrammes, mostly for each stage. There are sections on more unusual pruning techniques, such as topiary, or creating cascades. Pinch pruning is covered, too. From what I've read, one disadvantage of buying an older edition will be that thinking on best time to prune may have changed since. I am not totally sure, but think there was tendency to prune most things in autumn traditionally, whereas now, the advice is often to prune in early spring or at other times for certain plants. Where it seems important, I will probably double-check the info on best time to prune on the RHS site, but this book gives you the basic understanding and confidence to tackle most pruning jobs. Pruning is one of those tasks which some gardeners (like me) tend to leave until they can't put it off any longer, and others are constantly at it with shears and secateurs - neither probably get the best from their plants. I often put pruning off because unsure of how to best go about it, meaning to look it up, then never get round to it, and before I know it, the plant is leggy with bare stems.. I hope this book will give me more confidence to tackle pruning jobs at the best time, and it's handy to have a reference book, rather than having to hunt up the info for each plant, then, if on RHS site, to check their pruning groups.. If you want the most recent practises, and the widest possible range of plants included, you might be better going for the newest edition, but if you want a very informative book on pruning for a great price, then this is a great buy. Mine is in excellent condition and I got it for under £10, so am happy..
