OTC 6596 Brake Pad Gauge

When you can get the tool into position to make a measurement, it works great. Using it is relatively simple, but the vehicle might not cooperate in giving you access. In some cases, I can make the measurement without removing the wheel, in others the wheel must come off. Making the measurement is relatively easy, though, a single-hand operation. It’s nice to have a number and using this device will now be a part of my tire rotation routine. One thing, though, is that the gauge should be protected when stored. First option is to use the little pouch it comes in. Second option is to use the tube from an OTC 7312 seal pick (pictured) if you have one of those laying around, or something similar.

Perfect tool for accurately checking your brake pads. Much easier to use than other gauges. Fits in tight spaces and simple to use.

I find this tool to be very useful. It may not be super accurate, but it gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Like most automotive tools it will not work on all cars, but I find that it can be used on most. It can often be used without removing the tire if the rim has a big enough opening to allow access.

Wish I had had one of these 30 years ago. What a game changer. So much better than trying to use cheap gauges.

After trying to use it a few times; it comes apart and is hard to use. I gave it to another tech to try. He had the same problem, so I threw it in the garbage.

We have used this tool for a few months now. Works good on most vehicles etc measure the brake pad thickness without removing the wheel.

Useful tool for easy and precise measurement of just how much of your disc brake pads are left without requiring removal of the wheels unless you are still running with steel wheels and hubcaps. Arrived quickly and even came in a heavy duty plastic pouch which you can use to store the gauge on you peg board when not in use. Highly recommended.

This is something that I was looking from a long time. Finally a tool that can measure pads without removing the tires at least the 90% of the vehicles. It saves a lot of time and it gives a pretty close accurate about the condition on the pads. If the pads are low or suspect low then I would go further to do a brake inspection. A definitely a good tool to save time on brake inspections.
