The tunes on 'A Rise in the Road' are Yellowjacket-certified complex - laden with knuckle-busting time signatures and high-wire musicianship yet maintain a connection with the listener with every note, every bar and each successive song. Felix Pastorius joins the band on bass and replaces founding member Jimmy Haslip. Russell Ferrante, Will Kennedy and Bob Mintzer make up the group and along with guest trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, display an almost telepathic interplay across this collection of all-new tunes. 'A Rise in the Road' is a 10-track study that burnishes the group's sterling reputation for high quality tonal explorations and ensemble execution. Produced by Ferrante, Mintzer and Kennedy, the album stands shoulder-to-shoulder with their 21 previous efforts. "It's about the challenges that people face in their lives and whatever path they are on, explains Ferrante. "The music changes to accommodate new people. We're really pleased with the way 'A Rise in the Road' came out."Felix Pastorius is the son of legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, best known for his affiliation with jazz-fusion supergroup, Weather Report. Mintzer was familiar with Felix Pastorius as a top-flight musician, having sat in as a guest performer in the Jeff Coffin Mu'tet where Felix was the bassist.Personnel: Russell Ferrante (piano, keyboards), Bob Mintzer (saxophone), William Kennedy (drums, keyboards), Felix Pastorius (bass), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet - 3, 4, 8) Review: How is it possible to get as good as this - I've got most of the Yellowjackt's albums and am totally amazed at how the are able to find a way to raise the bar on their next album. They amaze me. Review: Rise in the road by Yellowjackets - i like this record very much: contemporary mainstream jazz with piece of tradition and modern ingredients. Their sax player really shines

Nice surprise
It takes me a while to fully appreciate a new cd and I am still listening to this Yellowjacket offering. I do like it very much and truthfully was caught off-guard by that fact because I don't have any of their music. Many of the tunes have already impressed me. Would highly recommend this cd to someone who likes jazz. Good stuff

Yellowjackets - Rise in the Road
I was very excited a the prospect of hearing a new bassist integrate into the YJ soundscape. Jimmy Haslip had been a such a major component since the beginning. So for the son of the legendary Jaco Pastorious - Felix to join the ranks, I was REALLY looking forward to hearing how things would differ. To be honest, I listened to the album a few times and don't miss it. To me it feels like Felix has been placed in a corner and been told to fit into the box. (Including his general tone) I've seen live youtubes where he gets a chance to really shine and he has this 'modern fusion bass tone' which is usually quite middy. But on the album, he's been pulled back a lot and I would hazard a guess, been told to have similar tone to Jimmy. As a bassist, I have modelled my own tone on the likes of JH, so I do't mind the similarities at all. There is also a risk of alienating fans with something radically different. For me, that's part of the problem, whilst I am a huge fan of the YJ and their sound, I think things are starting to sound dare I say it - samey? The compositions are nice to good and clearly these guys are incredible musicians and tight as a unit. I think I they erred on the side of caution with this one. It's a good album, but it not one of their best IMO. I will always be a fan and look forward to the next album with Felix more integrated into the band with HIS sound.

Many years after I took my scratched Yellowjacket LPs to the thrift store, I've loaded up on a half-dozen of their CDs, and of all of them I like "A Rise in the Road" the very best, without a doubt.

I guess I'm a late bloomer here but I just heard these guys this past summer at the Syracuse Jazz Fest and what a wonderful way to be introduce to a group hearing them live. They were just so good now I have heard a song or two over the years but never sat down and really heard them until then. They did play a number of songs from this album well these guys are very good. This album is a wonderful blend of songs and I feel a great represention of who the group are. They are all masters of their craft and flow together well. I found this to be a very pleasent album to listen to. It is so refreshing when you find or I should say I find a great album no bad notes here at least to my ears. If you are looking for a great jazz album by one of the best around today this album is for you. I just got the record today and after listening to got back on Amazon and bought a bunch more of their albums and I'm picky about my music. Now let me just say one thing about the sad state of our so called record stores, here in upstate New York Syracuse area there just isn't any place to buy jazz even Barnes & Noble who used to be halfway not bad have almost done away with jazz. This is a great Americsn art form and personally I now do my shopping here at Amazon. I have found everything I'm looking for plus they know me and make some great suggestions for items I may like.
