After the death of his girlfriend at the hands of Islamic terrorists, Mitch Rapp is drawn into the world of counterterrorism, mentored by tough-as-nails former U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Stan Hurley. Good, but not as good as the book
This is a 2017 film based (very loosely) on the series of spy novels written by the late author, Vince Flynn, centered on the character of Mitch Rapp (played in the movie by Dylan O'Brien). The book series started out with the novel Transfer of Power, which was actually Flynn's second novel, but the first to feature the character of Rapp. In that book, Rapp was an off-the-books CIA agent who hunted down terrorists in the prime of his career. After writing about 11 novels set around the older Rapp, Flynn wrote two prequel novels, American Assassin and Kill Shot, which basically filled in Rapp's origin story. This movie is loosely based on the novel American Assassin but changes elements of the story significantly (such as how Rapp's girlfriend is killed). Some elements from the book (and to an extent from Kill Shot) do make it into the movie, but it basically tells its own story (largely involving a rouge agent), while including character traits and heavily adapted plot elements from the books, as opposed to adapting the actual stories as Vince Flynn wrote them. For those who get the 4k disc, the A/V quality of the UHD disc is very good, and all of the extras are included on the UHD disc, although you do get a regular blu-ray disc as well. The extras include a making-of featurette that runs about 10 minutes, a featurette on casting O'Brien as Rapp, a featurette on the characters of Stan Hurley (played by Michael Keaton) and the main antagonist, a featurette on the stunts, and one on the locations in which the movie was shot, and then a Q&A session with O'Brien and Taylor Kitsch, that runs almost a half an hour (and is the longest of the extras). All totaled, you get about just under 90 minutes of material. This is a good action movie, but it is definitely better if you have not read the books and are already invested in the characters. I had not yet read the books when I saw the movie, but now that I have started reading the books I can definitely tell why some fans of the books really felt that the movie did not do enough to hold true to the books. That said, I think O'Brien did a very good job as a young Mitch Rapp, and Michael Keaton was great as Stan Hurley. Since the movie pretty much bombed in its theatrical release, the chances of there being a follow-up are pretty slim, but as a stand-alone action movie, it is definitely worth watching if you can accept that you are not going to get the story from the books.

Book
Met all expectations. The item arrived undamaged and in perfect condition - well packaged. The item description was very accurate and the value was fair. I would highly recommend this seller and would not hesitate to buy from them again.

Good movie
I'm not sure why this film did not do well. I really liked it. The first 3 or 4 minutes wakes you up and the in between times are not dull. CIA, espionage, threat of nuclear attack, foreign governments secrets, ex-spy guy gone rogue, revenge, etc... it's kind of got it all. I thought it was well written for what it was and Keaton did a good job. It might just be one odd my new faves!

Good action movie for fans of 'Jack Reacher' or the 'Bourne' movies
This was a solid movie that had a feel similar to the Jack Reacher movies or the Bourne movies. I really enjoyed it and hope they make another movie. I like the action and the pacing. The hand-to-hand was believable and wasn't over the top martial arts that wouldn't really happen in a real fight. I know this is based on a book series and plan to check it out. Hopefully, they'll pull more from the source material and we'll be able to see more movies like this.

Action but not representative of Flynn's work
I purchased this film because I am a fan of the Mitch Rapp series. If you have read the book, you will be disappointed because the director and screenwriters chose to alter every character, not just in appearance, but in their basic personality. Mitch Rapp comes off as an uncontrollable emotional single-focus bent upon revenge with some background preparational skills. His one flash of insight involves a female team member. Kennedy is sort of downplayed in intelligence and control. Stan has been cleaned up from a raging psychopath with a mean streak into a doubting but strong-willed leader. I miss the vicious and flawed training program, the logic behind the selection of Rapp and most of all, the clever and thoughtful individual excape and return. That said, as an action film, there is sufficient tension and enough twists to warrant my rating of three stars. The selection of Mitch's actor was poorly chosen. Mitch is supposed to be a physical athelete with quickness and strength, not a skinny college dude. The introduction of Mitch to the Orion program should have included more conflict, as Stan's concept of military background first has proven unworkable, his training too brutal and rigid and nowhere are Mitch's exceptional skills displayed other than a few short clips of him shooting and working out, which makes his eventual success less believable. If you want a real story, read the book American Assasin and you will be introduced to a great series.

Timely Movie
This was much better than so many bad reviews. I found it good entertainment, good action, decent acting, and actually sort of timely with what is going on with Iran (or Persia) these days (2019-2020). I watched it online, and then got my own blu ray copy. The story looks like there could have been a sequel, but that never happened. Too bad.
