I mostly use the SD Card and USB ports. I have tested the HDMI port to make sure it works however I don't use it often. I figured if I was going to buy a dongle for my MacBook I might as well get one with all the ports I may possibly utilize in the future. The USB and SD Card ports work great when transferring my files back and forth. The dongle is small for the functionality it provides and connects to my MacBook securely. This has been a nightmare - the slightest movement and it ejects my hard drive, disconnects unless propped on certain angles, and now after only one week of this it has officially died and my deadline is in a week.
