What size is medium on someone?

Definitely a size 10/12. I ordered my 10 year old who is 80lbs, 4'9 a medium and they fit well with a little room to grow in the waist.

Has anyone found about that fits through these loops without being an absolute nightmare?

Haven’t had any issues using these with Adidas belts.

Is there elastic at the bottom?

No, these ones are sitting straight leg no elastic at the bottom

Can they be worn as knickers too?

I am not really sure on that one. My boys wore them as their game pants for a baseball season.
