Great pin pointer
I am so pleased with my newly purchased PRO-FIND 40. For months I hesitated to buy one because of the 40's high price. I did lots of pin pointer research over three months before I bought my PRO-FIND 40. After purchasing, I still left my new 40 home each day while continuing to use my previous pin pointer. In early December I became extremely displeased with my previous pin pointer that was turning off while in use and not turning back on. I was detecting in the pouring rain. The temp was in the high 30 degree range and my cold wet hands were quite uncomfortable. When I returned home the previous pin pointer started working again. The next day I started using my new PRO-FIND 40 and I have been super pleased with this 40. Today December 20, while I was detecting the temp was around 30 or 31 degrees and snowing. I included a picture to show how much snow fell onto my detector's coil while in use this afternoon. The PIN-POINTER 40 worked flawlessly the whole six hours in freezing weather. It has also worked perfectly the past two previous weeks in non-freezing temperatures. I recommend all new potential purchasers first read the online manual and to watch MINELAB PIN-POINTER 40 videos. This will help you make the decision to buy one in confidence.

Serious Pinpointer With Excellent Depth, Ferrous ID, and Useful Field Controls
The Minelab PRO-FIND 40 is a premium pinpointer intended for detectorists who want more functionality than a basic on and off recovery tool. It combines five sensitivity levels, Ferrous Tone ID, vibration and audio feedback, Rapid Re-tune, an LED light, and full waterproofing to 10 feet. There is a bit of a learning curve because several functions share the same three buttons, but once you understand the control sequence it becomes very intuitive. Pros: The adjustable sensitivity is one of the biggest advantages. There are five levels, and you simply press the plus or minus button while the pinpointer is running to raise or lower sensitivity. Higher sensitivity provides more detection distance, while lowering it helps narrow down a target and can make the pinpointer more stable in mineralized or salty ground. Rapid Re-tune is particularly useful. While the pinpointer is powered on, a quick press of the power button recalibrates it to the immediate environment. This is useful if the ground itself is causing a response, if conditions change, or if you want to reduce the detection field as you get closer to the target. The Ferrous Tone ID is another genuinely useful feature. The PRO-FIND 40 provides different responses for ferrous and non-ferrous targets. A pinpointer is never going to replace the discrimination capabilities of a full detector, but having some additional information about the target while searching a hole can save time. Full waterproofing to 10 feet is also important. This is not merely splash resistant, so it can be used for beach detecting, river detecting, and shallow water recovery. I also prefer that Minelab uses a conventional 9V battery rather than a permanently installed rechargeable battery. A 9V can be replaced immediately in the field, and I can carry a spare without worrying about finding a charger or waiting for the pinpointer to recharge. Minelab rates battery life at approximately 20 hours. The progressive vibration and audio feedback make locating the exact position of a target much easier, particularly when working inside a plug or along the sidewall of a hole. The built-in LED is simple but useful when looking into deeper holes, detecting around dusk, or working underwater where visibility is limited. Minelab’s DIF technology is another thoughtful feature because it is designed to reduce interference with your primary detector when the pinpointer is switched off. The lost alarm is also useful. If no targets are detected and no buttons are pressed for five minutes, the pinpointer begins sounding an alarm. It continues for another five minutes before automatically shutting down. Considering how easy it is to place a pinpointer beside a hole and walk away from it, this is a feature I appreciate. Using the Controls: The controls are probably the least obvious part when you first start using the PRO-FIND 40, so understanding a few sequences makes a significant difference. To turn it on, hold the power button for approximately half a second. Keep the probe away from metal while it calibrates. You may initially hear two beeps, but wait for the third short beep before beginning to pinpoint because that third beep indicates calibration is complete. Under normal circumstances this happens almost immediately, although Minelab states that it can take longer after extended storage or a significant temperature change. Once it is running, use the plus and minus buttons to move through the five sensitivity levels. I would start somewhere in the middle and increase sensitivity when you want additional detection distance. If the pinpointer becomes noisy, responds to mineralized soil, or you are having difficulty isolating a target, decrease the sensitivity. A quick press of the power button while it is running performs Rapid Re-tune. This is worth remembering because you do not need to shut the pinpointer off and restart it every time environmental conditions change. Audio can also be controlled during startup. To turn the normal audio on, hold the plus button while powering the pinpointer on. To disable normal audio, hold the minus button while powering it on. Ferrous Tone ID is controlled separately once the pinpointer is already running. Hold the plus button until the long confirmation beep to enable the ferrous tones. Hold the minus button until the long beep to disable them. The LED operates automatically and cannot be switched off independently. Likewise, Minelab states that the vibration function cannot be independently toggled on and off. One other practical tip is that the probe detects along its sides as well as at the tip. If the pinpointer keeps indicating a target but you cannot find anything in the bottom of the hole, check the sidewalls. Reducing sensitivity and then using the tip can help isolate exactly where the target is located. Cons: The primary disadvantage is price. There are much cheaper pinpointers available that will locate a target in a hole, so the additional cost makes the most sense for someone who will use features such as adjustable sensitivity, Ferrous Tone ID, waterproofing, and Rapid Re-tune. The controls are also somewhat ambiguous until you learn the different button combinations. The plus and minus buttons perform different functions depending on whether you are powering the unit on, adjusting it while running, or holding a button for an extended period. Once learned, it is straightforward, but the operation is not completely self explanatory when you first pick it up. Ferrous Tone ID should also be viewed as supplemental information rather than the equivalent of target identification from a full-size detector. Bottom Line: The PRO-FIND 40 is a very capable pinpointer with substantially more functionality than a basic target recovery probe. Five sensitivity levels, improved detection depth, Ferrous Tone ID, Rapid Re-tune, progressive target feedback, DIF technology, an LED light, a lost alarm, a replaceable 9V battery, and waterproofing to 10 feet make it suitable for everything from conventional land detecting to beach and shallow water hunting. The controls take a little time to learn, but once you understand how the plus, minus, and power buttons interact, the additional functionality becomes genuinely useful rather than complicated.

Pro find 40; superb pin pointer
Very nice upgrade from the beginners Dr. Otek pin pointer. Highly portable and very loud. Pairs perfectly with my xterra elite detector, no interference at all. Ultra accurate up to about 6-8 inches on highest sensitivity. Reducing the sensitivity while searching a plug is what i find to be the most effective way to tell true distance to the object. The iron signal is a nice feature but it has to be practically touching the object to read as iron. So far it's been worth the money.

Love it!
Been using the pro-find 40 for a while now and love it. Make sure to pack extra rechargeable batteries as well. Works best with a fresh battery but rechargeable’s are very affordable these days so I just take extra with me for long metal detecting sessions.
