A killer rubber tyre? You read that right. And with a big wink to B movies of yesterday, director Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber is a solid, entertaining and downright bizarre piece of cinema. Rubber is a horror comedy at heart, and that’s hardly surprising when you consider what the plot actually is. For the film centres on the aforementioned rubber tyre, which just happens to possess psychic powers. It’s not long, then, before said tyre goes off on a killing spree. And when the film motors up properly, it really does deliver on the oddball concept. It takes too long to get there, though. What should be a fairly straightforward run for the movie takes some bumpy road thanks to some of the decisions that Dupieux makes. As such, Rubber isn’t full-on committed to its concept, and it’s when it’s dithering that it’s set to test the patience of its audience. When it does go full-on, though, it’s great fun. Rubber really does explode into life as it closes in on its finale, and there’s consequently more right with the film than wrong. It’s clearly the concept alone that’s the chief selling point of the movie, yet there is more to it than that. A little more conviction on the part of its director, though, and it could have been better still. -- Jon Foster French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux writes and directs this surrealist B-movie comedy horror following the outrageous antics of a killer tyre. Robert, a tyre that has been jettisoned in the middle of the California desert, suddenly comes to life and takes to the road, exploding small animals and people's heads as he sets out on a murderous rampage. Meanwhile, a cinematic audience follows his escapades from a safe distance through binoculars. Review: A masterpiece in surrealism. - After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt the need to defend this film. I saw a review which questioned the use of a tyre killing people with the power of its mind, as it was unrealistic, but I think that when someone creates a fundamentally surreal film about a homicidal tyre, you have to grant them a little bit of room to play outside of reality. The important thing with this film is to not question it too much. Let it draw you in, feel for the tyre, and don't question what Dupieux does with the film. One of the key themes is that of 'no reason'. He has deliberately gone for a film which doesn't need explanation, so that anything could happen within it. I think that the film is excellent, with some beautiful cinematography, an incredible soundtrack, and some very clever moments, and very funny moments. It is presented in a novel way, and has some very weird parts, but I think that you have to get past that when you're watching a film about a killer tyre. In summary, I would call this film artistic surrealism, and hopefully it'll become a cult classic. It's not for everyone, but if you like comedy, or even just film in general, and you want to see something different from every other film you own, this is well worth it. I cannot wait for the release of Wrong, Dupieux's next film. I will be getting that as soon as it's available. Review: Beware the Rubber’s in the night ! - Great film made by someone with an amazing imagination , a good laugh . An old rubber tyre left on the side of the road becomes a cereal killer . I kid you not folks . Mr Fix

Up there with Icecream Man and Bad Taste.
Imagine if you will a discarded car tyre lying in a desert which suddenly and inexplicably becomes sentient and homicidal. And there you have a part of the plot of this bizarrely enjoyable and cinematic (yet highly unreal) gore-fest. Also taking on board that this is a film about making a film where some people are shot and don't die but others (the observing crowd) are poisoned whilst living alfresco in the desert by eating food delivered daily by a nerd on a push-bike and you're still only part way into this film. Personally I loved it but can quite see how many people would feel that they'd wasted a couple of hours of their life watching it. This is no deeply meaningful film full of symbolism and hidden depths it is simply an enjoyable (to my mind at least) jaunt through a few different facets of the blood spattered, psychopathic killer, genre. As I say I truly enjoyed it but then again I've never been quite right in the head anyway - or so I've been told.

Don't knock what you don't understand...
Several critics have offered their opinions on how this film should have been a bit different, and how if only the director had done it more like this, or more like that, it would have been good/better (e.g. the amazon.co.uk review above). It reminds me of football talk - every single England fan knows exactly what the manager should do - it's obvious! Why can't he see it? If only he would listen to them, they'd win the world cup every time! Rubber is not the kind of movie you can meaningfully criticise in this way. It does not attempt to be like any film we have seen before. It needs to be taken on its own terms, and this isn't all that easy considering how strange those terms are. I think it's fairly likely that Mr Dupieux is happy with his movie - so let's ask why? What did he see in this concept and why did he execute it this way? If we can answer these questions satisfactorily to ourselves, we can enjoy the movie for what it is (or not, as the case may be). Rubber is the kind of film that makes some people angry because they suspect they might not have understood it. They therefore go on the attack, either openly or by damning with faint praise. Personally I didn't feel the film was trying to be particularly `clever.' The list of things that happen for `no reason' at the beginning should be a clue: why does the main character have to hide in The Pianist? Because he's a Jew in Nazi Warsaw. Unless Mr Dupieux is a complete idiot (highly unlikely) then he knows this, and the `no reason' thing is clearly somewhat tongue in cheek. Or maybe I didn't get it. Either way, I don't really mind. I found the movie highly enjoyable. It made me laugh and it certainly held my attention for the full running time, which is more than I can say for many more traditionally plotted films. It's also very pleasing to see some intentional absurdism/surrealism in a film. There's not enough of it around. Films aren't real, after all, so why try to make them realistic? As long as they follow their own internal logic (and Rubber does so), they'll work.

You won't get tyred of this B movie homage.
It's just mental fun this one- and yes it's that good and yes it really shouldn't be. A tyre wakes up and goes on a rampage killing everything and anything that comes into its path. Not by squishing mind but by a scanner like 'I will break you' way of doing things. Director's done well here with his time consuming angles, production values are high considering budget. To add to the plot a movie watching crowd watch the movie with us as everything unfolds. It's nut but works. Some well handled jokes, though won't be for everyone. However a movie solely about a killer tyre won't be for almost anyone out there. Again should be a messy stinking pile of.... but works, crazy movie.

So bad, its....bad.
Some people obviously take the view that a film whose plot make no sense and is badly written can be entertaining. I however thought it was just plain and simple a bad film. I was hoping for something along the lines of Planet terror or death proof, but this is like a student project film, loads of random ideas stuck together on a shoestring with bad dialogue. I can't blame the actors as they have nothing to work with, but no one in it had any charater at all, I just didnt care about anyone in it, including the tyre. The effects are ok, but the films only hope for me was to have ridiculous amounts of gore and loads of crazy deaths, but the deaths were few and all the same, some even off camera. Only positives: music & scenery were ok.

No reason!
Why did I enjoy this film? No reason! Why was this tyre able to go around killing people? No reason? Why was it set in the desert? No reason? Why was this movie so strange? No freaking reason! We as an audience watch any normal movie, and may question logic, storytelling, writing, but this film is literally centred around making you go "What the hell??" There is no logic here, this is just a random warped movie with no point to it whatsoever, it's just nonsense! I have to say, this was actually entertaining, totally bats**t and stupid, but entertaining, why? I have no idea? I wouldn't say this is worth watching, because saying that is like calling it a good movie, but if you do decide to watch it be warned that the whole purpose of this film is to be really random. There's a monologue at the beginning that sums the whole film up. Interesting viewing.

pick your own interpretation
Is this an incredibly artsy fartsy film about man's inhumanity to the tools he uses to master his world? Is Robert somehow an icon, a symbol for all the downtrodden and disengaged people of the world? Could Robert been healed by a visit to Doctor Phil? Or is this just a cheesy movie, like "Robogator Versus Bunzilla the Brave"? Something gory and dumb, something not bothering with because, after all, who wants to go into work the next day and discuss the virtues of "Rubber" when you can discuss what the person from "So You Think You Can Trance" was doing st the peace negotiations? Or is it just a fun movie? I'm going with the "fun movie" aspect. Stephen Spinella (Lt. Chad) sets the scene with the introduction. He discusses movies and how the truly great movies have something unexplainable about them. This is the point whether you decide whether you want to continue watching or not. If you're intrigued by the monologue, finish the movie. If you feel somehow upset or offended by the monologue, stop watching right at that spot. After all, the premise is totally crazy - a tire (Robert) wakes up (maybe?) in a dump and decides it's time to change his life. So he starts rolling...and rolling...and rolling and along the way, Robert uses his mind power to make various animals and people's heads explode. Now you either buy this premise of not but since you made it through the monologue, strap yourself in because it will be a bizarre ride. Robert destroys but he also loves. Robert lives but he also dies. This review is going in circles but you're still reading it and I am still writing it. Why? "No reason". If you want to see blood and guts and gore, this is not the movie for you. If your taste in movies run towards slasher horror flicks, this is not for you. But if you want a fun, twisted ride, this is the movie for you. It has quickly made itself in my top 10 favorite movies. _Enjoy_ because that's what it's about.

Its a cheesy movie, as it was meant to be. I bought this as a joke because my buddy said " I would rather watch this movie than The Force Awakens". So i called his bluff, now we just need to find time to watch it together.
