Tex : Hinton, S. E.: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: a tale that twists and leaves you feeling tender. - S.E. Hinton is back in my life! Introducing my young edgy teen, has been rewarding and interesting to see if the tech age kids can go for it. She does! I guess the love some have for horses is the foot hold in this story. Texas is a teen being looked after by his older brother Mace. Mace does something that is unforgivable in Tex's eyes, but vital to their survival in their hick town. Some people are stayers and some people are leavers, then their Pop comes back. A truth slips out and anger takes on a life of it's own, then leaves a nasty trail. It all seems so hopeless when Jamie becomes the forbidden light at the end of Tex's tunnel. I still have the teen in me after all these years. I'm so glad there is no such thing as out growing S. E. Hinton. Review: Five Stars - good very pleased will use seller again5*

"There are people who go places and people who stay..."
This book is sort of a YA kitchen-sink drama, but the characters are so engaging and the author's desire to be authentic is so earnest and honest you're willing to overlook some of the more out-there plot developments, and focus on the valuable insights. I was reminded of those books and movies that have a scene in which a pilot is operating a simulator. After takeoff the control room programs increasingly dire simulated threats - rain, then high wind, then an engine malfunction, then a brake failure, then a loss of cabin pressure and so on. Tex sort of has to go through that as the book progresses. I kept waiting for him to be diagnosed with cancer and then struck by lightning. Through it all Tex maintains a certain puppyish charm and by the time the hard knocks have softened him up and then toughened him up the reader really hopes that he'll receive the happy ending he seems to deserve. Unlike some teen-noir there's actually a ray of upbeat optimism at the end, which was fine by me. Actually, every character has moved on from where he was at the beginning, and while everything revolves around Tex, all the other characters do add variety and range to the book. The writing is along the lines of YA-literary. There are some fine lines, some well-crafted set pieces, and a few digressions that wander off and then turn back to the main story line with a bit of a twist. While this feels like a single work it's actually pretty episodic, although a few story lines and a number of underlying themes, (about family, and friendship, and responsibility), tie it all together. While the author knows her readers and knows what interests them the book doesn't pander and it hits its marks efficiently and cleanly. The writing isn't affected or obscure, but it also isn't simple or obvious. There is a lot for a careful reader to find and think about, and isn't that the best thing you can say about a book like this?

Well I have been trying to buy this book in Spain since I read it, and that was fifteen years ago. I'm really glad I finally got it, and in original english version... I recommend this book to anyone, because it's great. I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I think Mason is one of the best S. E. Hinton characters... He looks so hard but inside he's really sensible and loves his brother with his soul. I always loved him. Tex is so sweet though... He's great too. It's funny at times, and hard at times... And it explains the end of That was then, this is now!
