In my opinion (I’m no expert) I would be concerned that the mushroom flushes you’d eventually get may be from another colony of unidentified or possibly poisonous variety. I cut down a tree, wait 3 weeks for the trees natural enzymes which prevent fungal growth to break down and then inoculate those logs. This way I can be reasonably sure the shiitake mycelium gets there first and lessens the possibility of some other not so edible variety showing up. Again I’m no expert which is why I don’t trust my ability to identify mushrooms by sight alone. My logs sit in a damp dark part of my woods where all sorts of nasty fungi grow, at least I can be reasonably sure that the mushroom that looks like a shiitake growing from the hole I put a plug in, is in fact a shiitake. **Q: do they reproduce or have to ise more pligs for more mushrooms?** A: Set up correctly, the fungus colonize the log, thereby allowing it produce mushrooms for years to come. **Q: Is mango wood ok?** A: They didn't work for me at all in the recommended oak log. **Q: Can you use candle wax to cover the openings?** A: I bought this kit a while back, followed the instructions, the whole project was a failure. The wax they provide is candle wax.
