I don't know what is "busy household" for you, but I could hear it from the kitchen, through the sitting room to the outside terrace. My family members would jump up everytime it rang. You set it in hours and minutes ( not seconds), which for most purposes is fine. It gives a warning alarm five minutes before time, which you may find useful or annoying.
