Persuasion [DVD] [1995]

This is a wonderful adaptation of 'Persuasion'. It's faithful to the text, the period details are very good and the direction and production are both excellent. Amanda Root is exactly as I imagined the heroine to be and Ciaran Hinds makes a wonderful romantic lead, a mixture of love for ann and frustration with her family and friend who exert too much influence upon her. A special mention of the lighting of this production must be made. It's beautiful and atmospheric.

The best filmed version of Persuasion. Very enjoyable.

The best dramatised version made with brilliant actors

Not much to dislike here. Director Roger Michell does much to bring something stirringly visual to the drama, though as ever with BBC productions, he had a limited budget to play with. The cast is a nice bunch that work together nicely, with nobody out-acting anyone else to steal scenes that are not theirs. Amanda Root holds the thing together, though she is not perhaps the most obvious choice to play Anne Elliott.The story stays pretty close to the novel, and uses plenty of location shooting for authenticity. The costumes are nicely understated, with none of the overblown obviousness of the rich folks, that designers sometimes feel is necessary to make sure we know whose got all the money. Even so, Root is a bit too plainly attired at times, even though she plays a woman a little older than most of Austen's lead females.This mini-series has a low-key DVD cover in the UK, but is given an odd-looking cheesy fairytale romance cover for US viewers. It is anything but cheesy though, as it delivers what you'd expect of an Austen story - well-crafted drama, a little comedy, and plenty of engaging warmth in the characters.As ever, this 1995 production has been completely trounced by ITV's 2007 version (Persuasion : Complete ITV Adaptation [2007] [DVD]). The 1971 one (), starring Ann Firbank, is also excellent.Persuasion [DVD] [1971] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], but is hard to find on anything other than NTSC format.

This was the production that awakened me to the power of Jane Austen's commentary on human society.The previous production by the BBC had been in the rose-tinted, lovey-dovey form that I had put me off since English literature lessons at school. But, here, at last, was a version of the story with real bite. When characters in the story say things, it is not just a rosey recital of sentiments, but can be said with cuttingly incisive effect. It really felt as though we were looking at real people living their lives, and not just actors reciting lines in front of a camera.

Good story

I can’t get enough Austen anyway. This is an older version. I enjoyed the take on the novel. The more recent version is wonderful too. A wonderful way to escape for a couple of hours.

Et Dieu sait que je suis une grande fan de Jane Austen, fan qui se fait un devoir de regarder chaque adaptation qui passe. Cette version de Persuasion, qui date de 1995, est à mon sens celle qui, à ce jour, est la plus fidèle au roman, qui en saisit le mieux l'esprit et décrit le mieux l'époque, grâce à une reconstitution de grande classe (décors, costumes) et à un magnifique jeu d'acteurs, Amanda Root (Anne Elliot) en tête. Celle-ci n'est au départ que la seconde fille d'un baronet, plutôt mal-aimée par les siens qui la considèrent comme quantité presque négligeable alors qu'elle est parfaite de dignité, de dévouement et d'empathie. La vie qui ne l'a pas épargnée va se charger de lui rendre ses droits et c'est ce cheminement vers le bonheur que nous suivons avec délices. Son épanouissement personnel et ses retrouvailles avec son amour de jeunesse, le capitaine Wentworth, s'accompagnent heureusement d'une transformation physique palpable, qui fait tout le charme de ce film : de chrysalide, la jeune femme se transforme en élégant papillon. Persuasion est un vibrant plaidoyer pour la cause des femmes et leur droit au bonheur dans l'étroit carcan de la bonne société géorgienne. Un délicieux bonbon anglais pour les après-midis pluvieuses, avec happy end en bonus.Attention, ce film est en anglais avec sous-titres anglais uniquement.

正直キャストされた方々の顔ぶれは「見てみたい！」という気持ちにはなりにくい思いでしたが、同じ原作の他の作品との違いを見てみるために購入しました。最後の映像も今までにないストーリーでした。やはり配役が華やかさというか、もう少し若い感じがでていればとは思いました。

Nice version, our preference

A fairly good adaptation of the book. However I prefer the 2007-version. That might be a TV-series with more time for the different characters, while this is a movie-theatre film with a more limited time to tell the story. (Have not seen the 2022-version. Just discovered that it exists.)

Siempre me ha gustado esta versión de la novela. El DVD se ve con calidad de VHS, pero me imagino que no habrá otra calidad.
