I use it for homeschooling my twins, and I am a former teacher, so I am pretty particular about my curriculums. If you are looking for a robust ELA curriculum, this is a great choice. There are a lot of different wonders curriculum books and companions that work together, but if you need just one to start with, the reading, writing companion would be my first choice. Many of the passages here appear in the reading writing workshop textbook, but there are several other passages in the reading writing workshop textbook that do not appear in the companion. The companion is very thorough and provides a lot of different structured activities to truly dig in and work with the text. Ultimately the difference is the reading writing workshop textbook has more passages and some exercises, but the reading writing companion provides more practice with fewer passages. There are also some writing prompts and lessons here, but I have decided to go with a different writing curriculum, although you could use this one if you wanted to. The second book I would recommend to add the the reading writing companion would be the literature anthology, as there is no overlap with the reading writing companion or the reading/writing workshop text book. However, many of the reading, writing companion, exercises exercises and lessons are based on stories that can be found in the complementary literature anthology. You could manage a pretty good curriculum with only the reading, writing companion, but for a truly complete curriculum, I highly recommend adding on the literature anthology. If you are considering this curriculum for homeschooling, I would start with the reading, writing companions. See if you like the curriculum and then expand to the literature anthology and then add the reading writing workshop textbook as a third item. There may be other curriculum supplemental materials as well, but these are the three we are working with. As a final note, the passages are excellent and really get the kids thinking and learning about a variety of different subjects from history to science.
