Aqara Presence Sensor FP2, mmWave Radar Wired Smart Sensor, Zone Positioning, Multi-Person & Fall Detection, High Precision with More Privacy, Supports HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant

I've been using the Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 for a few weeks now and honestly it's on a different level compared to the old PIR motion sensors I used to use. Those basic sensors always leave me sitting in the dark if I don't move enough while reading or watching telly but this thing uses mmWave technology which means it can see me even if I'm just breathing. It's properly clever how it tracks multiple people at once and you can set up different zones in a single room. The setup was a bit fiddly in the app at first because you have to map out your room and define where the furniture is located. I did struggle a bit with some 'ghost' detections where it thought someone was in the room when it was empty but moving the sensor away from a rotating fan fixed that. It's much more sensitive than a standard motion detector so you have to be careful with placement. One of the best bits is that it works as a light sensor too so I can automate my curtains and lights based on how bright it is in the lounge. Since it's mains powered with a USB cable you don't have to worry about batteries dying every few months which is a massive plus for me though it does mean you have a wire trailing down the wall if you don't hide it well. When you compare this to a traditional PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor the pros are obvious as you get way more detail and no 'timeout' when you're still. However the cons are that it's much more expensive and requires a constant power source whereas a PIR can live on a coin battery for a year and is tiny. If you just need a light to pop on in a cupboard stick with a PIR but for a smart living room this FP2 is the way to go. There is also a fall detection feature which is great for peace of mind if you have elderly relatives living with you although I haven't had to rely on that yet thank goodness. It integrates perfectly with my HomeKit setup and the lag is almost non-existent. Overall I'm really chuffed with it despite the slightly steep price tag.

The sales is telling you it provides zone detection, fall detection, etc. Yes, it does. Not at the same time tho. If it's ceiling mounted, there's no zone detection but you do get fall detection. In wall mount setting, there's no fall detection but you do get zone detection. Ghosting is a problem. Interference is a problem. Detection angle is a problem. It's better than a motion detector, it's faster in response than most wireless motion detectors, reliability is questionable. I have set up 3 of these. 1 in the living room, 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the home office. All of them monitor both presence and light and connected with Homekit. If I enter a region and it's dark enough, the corresponding lights come on, if I enter a different region, old lights should turn off. Usually this works nice but sometimes a "ghost" is left in the previous area causing the lights to stay on or even turn on when nobody is there. My partner is 5'11" and around 55kg, this presence sensor sometimes doesn't recognise her causing the lights to turn off. So it's not accurate. App is okay, got used to it as I'm using Aqara for a longer period now. The detection zone's mimum size is 50cm*50cm (1.6feet*1.6feet). Overall, if you're happy tweeking a bit with Apple Home (write simple scripts), it can be a powerful ally. Way better than Hue/Eve motion sensors. To give you an example: If you don't want the sensor to turn things off and if you use light bulbs which can be app controled and dimmed (Hue, IKEA Tradfri, whatever), you may want to check if it's on or even better what's the percentage setting on it before turning it off by leaving the zone. This can be achieved by basic scripting. Allow some delay before turning everything on and check the value again before turning it off to ensure less detection errors occur. This may also give a nice extra to your lighting setup.

one word Awesome. Completely changes everything. Meets and exceeds my expectations. Aqara have produced one hell of a sensor. The Lux sensor alone, is the fastest I’ve ever used. And that alone would be enough reason for me to buy more. I have two of the original FP1 sensors, which I’m currently using and both have been faultless. Once setup properly. But have been slow to detect presence. So still need a additional sensor to speed up motion detection and detect Lux levels. Absolutely not the case with the FP2’s presence sensing and its ability to zone a room. The down sides. The WiFi 2.4ghz only. Which makes it tricky to initially setup if your mesh router can’t split the networks. So if your a sole android user. This could cause a problem. As a IOS user and HomeKit user I had no such problem. But the Aqare iOS app when used with this sensor is extremely slow to display the current position of presence. Which gives the end user the belief that it’s not working as expected. But when you switch over to the android app. Positioning updates of presence update in real time. So obviously a bug with the IOS app. Home assistant. HomeKit integration works perfectly. I was aware that the sensor doesn’t currently work with GH and can’t be exposed to GH via home assistant. But that’s easy to get around with a few helpers and exposing the helpers to GH if needed. I will absolutely be buying more when available

I'm am extremely disappointed with these sensors after watching so many youtube videos and having so many plans to integrate them in my smart home with homeassistant. Ghosting (had 3 extra people in the room at times) and false positives make this device absolutely useless unless your routines are such where falso positives aren't an issue...for me it meant that when on the sofa the lights should be off but while watching movies at some point it lost track of me and thanks to all the ghosts in the room away from the sofa it turned on the light which during horror movies really kills the vibe. Even when I went to sleep I'd wake up to my security cameras alerting that my livingroom lights went on for a second at 4am (all devices are off and there are blackout blinds so that 1 second of false positives also messes up the reliability of my cameras)... this is supposed to be able to track multiple people at once so I thought I could make conditional routines based on the number of people in an area but turns out it can only detect if an area is occupied so the only workaround is the split each square on the map into a separate zone...that's annoying as it tracks multiple people so I'd like this information exposed in the app and homeassistant. Another annoying thing is the devices' field of view...to get the whole room (left and right walls) you need to install it in the corner...not only do they not include a corner mount they also don't let you rotate the in app map so my square rooms have to be represented diagonally which also applies to all the furniture so I can't even get the boundaries for the sofa perfectly. Overall I feel like this is a beta product and that it shouldn't be sold given all the false positives. I'm sure some people can make it work depending on what kind of routines they want to use it for but still it's overpriced for what it does and the ads as well as influencers really exaggerate it's features. I've sent mines back. Fyi I have various motion sensors and also use the aquara roller shades so I do like the company but just not this device.

I have repalced all my mmWave presence sensors around the house where people stay for any period of time without moving (lounge/bedrooms). I used to rely on PIR motion sensors for turning on lights however as anyone who has used standard motion sensors will tell you, when motion stops, the sensor changes state to false and if automations are not setup correctly lights will turn off. Previous to these sensors I had Everything Presence One sensors in the main rooms. I was forever tweaking settings and even then the sensors didnt work as expected. With these Aqara sensors I havent had anywhere near as many issues. I have paired all of the FP2 sensors with Home Assistant rather than Apple Home - this way I get full capability and can automate until my heart is content (I have pushed these devices from HA into Apple Home though so I have th ebest of both worlds). These are fairly easy to setup however the setup is the key to the reliability with these - in the app you must set room entrance/exit points and room boundaries. Don't leave the app to make up the room boundaries as it doesn't really work. Invest the time setting these up and you will be rewarded with a sensor that just works

Very sadly, this experiment was not a success and I've had to return it. Contrary to the many youtubers and the sorts claiming all it's good deeds, the device has simply too much ghosting for it to be useful, and to pay a prime for an unreliable device it's just not worth it. My goal was to set it in my office room to detect my presence so I can switch some lights on/off. As sometimes I'm not moving I was hoping this sensor, contrary to other sensors, would be able to realize I'm still there, just a bit quiet. It does seem to be able to do that, and knows I'm there even if I don't move, problem is that I never seem to disappear from the room, sometimes it does realize I got out of the room, but far too many it gets glitched and considers I'm still there even if I left half an hour ago. Worse, when I come back it thinks someone else got in and now there's two people in a room where there's only me, ie. ghosting happens. It got so bad at a point there were 4 mes in the room and I think I could have taken it to the max 5 eventually. I even tried to reset it, I tried to use the "door icon" to tell it where the door is in hopes it will understand I'm exiting the room. Nothing. I could understand a bit of tweaking around but hours went by with the ghosts still there, I don't understand how it can consider there's a non-moving invisible person at a point for 5-6 hours in a row and still not realize that's a ghost. In all honesty, I understand new tech has it's downsides and I could be ok with it if it was cheaper, but for the price I expect perfection and I got a Beta version of a device which is far too faulty. I'm not into being a Deluxe Beta tester, better wait for this technology to actually work. In the meantime, Samsung's Aeotec partner makes very decent motion sensors that while they can't determine where you are in the room or if you are sitting down/standing, they are 3 times cheaper and if placed strategically (like under a desk pointing towards the chair) you can do wonders with them (so basically, I prefer to get 3 PIRs for the price of this one, those will do). That all said, I was able to check that the Aqara FP2 sensor was capable to approximately follow me across the room, but it didn't seem to be able to know if I was standing/sitting down/laying or anything, it always said I was standing only. I also updated the device's firmware and had it on the wall 2m+ above the floor (in case anyone was doubting). So I feel like many of it's supposed features weren't working and this tech needs lots more of tweaking before being sold as "prime". I am willing to pay for these a prime once they actually work, and I was looking forward to buy a few of them for different areas of the house (I loved the idea of it triggering when I go to bed or wake up in the morning), so I am very disappointed indeed and may need some time before I can trust Aqara again, meanwhile, I won't trust certain youtubers anymore.

If you anything like me you watch YouTube and get caught up in what they tell you. This product looks exciting but there are plenty of 'issues'. Unlike some I got it registered quickly and, after a brief amount of annoyance, worked out how to map my room. Will say, that could be made far easier to use and the stickers option is limited. Initially it went up and worked well in the room we wanted it in, the kitchen, I even set two zones, but then it started mucking about a bit, so I moved it around a bit. PRO TIP, I've had mine about two weeks and it's still stuck up with blue tack, be 100% sure it's were you want it before committing ! Anyway, the biggest issue we faced is we have a poxy hood hanging from our ceiling with interrupts vision around the kitchen in some places. We lowered it so it had vision then it started doing other odd things. It's obviously not the fault of Aqara we have big block in the kitchen, didn't cross our minds, but still though there was ample space for it to see someone. After a lot of moving about we do have it in a good place where it does work as expected bar one blind spot in front of the fridge, but a slight movement qets it on. The biggest annoyance was, but not so much now, was the ghosting, that is pretty bad at times, how it 'sees' people when they clearly aren't there is mad given it works on presence and has just left a person on the grid as they left the area as though it can't see it left. We have a medium sized dog also that sometimes sets it off, but mostly doesn't. Also, even if the light gets 'stuck on' for a while the app seems to clear that ghost after about a minute. It will drive you mad for sure but as stated I do now have it working as expected 95% of the time in a room with an obstruction. 100% not worth £89 for all the stress it causes but hopefully firmware etc will continue to improve use.

Pretty much does the job, I use this for opening my blinds in the morning and it works perfectly for that. But I also use it for powering on a wall panel, it's great to set certain zones in the room and have them appear in the smart home device menu as a separate device and build automations around it but I've found the positioning isn't always the same, usually accurate to a foot or two but as I have small rooms this foot can mean it decides someone sitting on the arm chair is standing Infront of the wall panel... And on occasion you can be standing at the panel but just outside of the zone. You can clearly see inaccuracies just on the app as guests sitting on armchairs/sofas arent actually in that place. I've changed position of the sensor multiple times (in recommended positions) and not really been able to improve this accuracy. All in all, useful device that tends to do it's job but fine accuracy could do with some tweaking. Hopefully firmware will iron this out in time.
