Wow. What a gem! Back in 2005, we had an online jukebox in the pub, and the barman used to play the track Diamonds and Guns, which I loved. How can songs like this stay underground? I finally got the album, and was blown away! California Babylon is the best marching song! Buy this album and spread the word.

This is indeed an interesting one! Well lets see, where to begin.. Well the Transplants seem to have fused a few styles and genres together quite successfully, there may be some controversy surrounding this release, especially in the ‘Punk’ community. That said, from what I can see this is a favourable mix and one which really works well to create a rather unique record. The mix of traditional punk rock, (just look at the band line up) plus a blend of samples, loops and rap metal make this an interesting and catchy listen. Now I am aware of the fact that each of these styles has been flooded by copy cat artists until nothing original remains, but the thing is the ‘Transplants’ have created something that defies logic and really does seem inspirational and invigorating. You will hear echoes of ‘Rancid’, ‘Boxcar Racer’, ‘Sum 41’, ‘Operation Ivy’, ‘Kid Rock’, ‘Lost Prophets’ and many others. Add to this some well thought out samples, loops and guest artists and instruments that you simply would not expect to find on the record you thought this was going to be. Let’s admit it; we all thought that this was going to be a purely punk collaboration, (especially after seeing the name) no harder than ‘Boxcar Racer’ and no more ‘up to date’ than ‘Rancid’. Well, we were all very wrong! This is deep, yet cheeky, up to date, yet not unfamiliar. It manages to contain lyrics that would keep the ‘Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ happy without making an easy listening record. For no matter how you look at it, this is in not easy listening. It’s beautiful and clumsy and heavy and it is exciting. To quote the ‘Bouncing Souls’ “Some hardcore songs, to make us feel tough’, this record certainly does that; it makes you feel sleazy and powerful and untouchable. With it’s gorgeously executed ‘Travis Barker’ drumming and its insatiable grooves it will steal your heart and will be your new driving record, with its slow calculated intensity and kinetic manner. I think many different fans of all kinds of genres are going to like this record, with special emphasis on fans of bands like ’28 Days’ and ‘Rancid’. So there you go people, it is a whole lot more than you would expect and a whole lot better too. So if you are looking for some music refreshment then look no further.

There's nothing wrong with this product as such but I personally didn't like it although my husband did. Its all a matter of musical taste.

This album should be, as described on the internet, a fusion of, "hip hop, punk and rap", and not necessarily in that order. After listening to it for the first time "diamonds and guns" and "D.R.E.A.M" are two of the best tracks on the album. Cutting straight to the point, nearly every song has an over use of punk guitars and the rapping is awful in places, with U.S. accents trying to imitate the Audio Bully's, The Streets and Pitman but failing to deliver any of the charm and the quintessential Englishness of the aforementioned bands. Of course they are shouldn't be trying to give a dry English feel to the rhythm but they try hard and on occasions its quite good, see "diamonds and guns". Saying that, the song writing and production overall is quite strong....

Persönlich gesprochen ist dies The Transplants selftitled eine der eindruckvollsten Platten, die ich je gehört habe. Ich bin immer wieder sehr beeindruckt von Tim Armstrongs Schöpfungsreichtum, da dieser ja neben Solo, Rancid und den Transplants sogar ein eigenes Musical schreibt. Die Kreativität diese Mannes ist sehr beeindruckend! Doch auch die Passagen von Rob Astin sind sehr gelungen und die Lines werden mit dessen imposanten Stimme geradewegs in den Kopf gehämmert. Travis Barker ist ja bekanntlich kein unbeschriebenes Blatt, man kennt sein Können von blink-182 seit über 15 Jahren. Und hier wirds ganz erstaunlich: Wenn man genauer hinhört, gibt es auf dem Album eine Art "Grundbeat", der sehr viele Stücke durchzieht. Doch ich finde genau das ist wahnsinnig gut gelungen, man ist von vornherein begeistert und nach 2 Songs entsteht schon ein Gefühl für diese (experimentelle) Art von Musik. Pers. Depuis que je possède ce disque (2003, tout de même), je le ressors régulièrement avec grand plaisir. C'est que c'est une franche réussite; s'il n'y avait pas un ou deux morceaux un ton en-dessous du reste, je parlerais même de chef-d'œuvre. Car dans le genre fusion rap/rock, on ne voit tout simplement pas mieux (Beastie Boys hors concours). Le premier titre donne l'ambiance: tendue, avec un son à la fois puissant mais avec des respirations. Dès le deuxième titre, l'énorme "Tall Cans In The Air", on sait que Tim Armstrong, leader de Rancid, a tout bon, et ce pour plusieurs raisons. L'homme a compris l'essence du rap, son côté ambiance très important qui permet au morceau d'avoir une couleur, un timbre. D'autres se contentent d'ahaner des lyrics, ce qui n'est pas suffisant. L'habillage est important et Armstrong le sait. Il va donc chiader les arrangements. D'autre part, les Transplants ne versent jamais dans le hard rock, grosse erreur de tous (TOUS) les autres groupes qui s'essaient au mariage rock/rap. Armstrong vient du punk et ne nous fait jamais le coup des guitares criardes aux riffs géométriques. Il préfère les gros sons de tronçonneuse bien épais et efficaces, les accords lâchés avec hargne ou morgue selon l'humeur. Ce que va prouver toute la suite du disque, très variée et bien écrite. Car en plus des deux points forts mentionnés, Armstrong va particulièrement soigner les compositions. Preuve en est le magnifique refrain triste et désabusé, en mode mineur, de "D.J. D.J.". Déboule ensuite un "Diamonds And Guns" hyper efficace qui tient sur un diabolique et entêtant riff de piano avec des chœurs à la "Sympathy For The Devil". Ca baisse d'un petit ton avec "Quick Death", punk et abrasif mais pas inoubliable non plus mais ça repart de plus belle avec la superbe et bien nommée "Sad But True" qui démarre comme une ballade triste, donc, on pense aux Pogues, il y a un orgue d'église pas gai et puis finalement la rage revient avec un refrain killer à la Joe Strummer. Encore une grande réussite. "Weigh On My Mind" qui suit est encore un mid-tempo hargneux comme il faut puis vient l'énergique et débraillé "One Seventeen", court et concis. La fin de l'album est très bonne: "California Babylon" étonne et détonne avec un piano honky-tonk sautillant, le morceau swingue avec morgue et surprend, avec encore les chœurs de "Sympathy For The Devil" ! Arrive le sublime hymne déglingue "We Trusted You" porté par un dégoût puissant et une colère froide. Constat: les Transplants sonnent vrais et ridiculisent en un seul morceau tous les Rage Against The Machine qui se la jouent énervés en fomentant la révolution avec des slogans de bac à sable. "D.R.E.AM." se place en avant-dernière position, le morceau le plus hip hop du disque, ambiance urbaine oppressante. Et on termine en grande pompe avec le superbe "Down In Oakland" à l'ambiance de western spaghetti comme un générique de fin qui sentirait la rouille et l'os. L'album est donc riche, puissant, bien torché et envoyé, fort de morceaux ayant tous leur personnalité. Je l'ai déjà dit: on a frôlé ici le chef-d'œuvre. Une réussite incontestable et qui jure formidablement avec les piteuses productions actuelles...

Je connaissais (très) mal Rancid. Quelques articles lus sans conviction, quelques titres écoutés d''une oreille distraite, et le groupe et son leader Tim Armstrong hâtivement catalogués dans la rubrique punks américains à Doc Martens, tatouages et Budweiser. Autant dire que ce Cd des Transplants m''a agréablement surpris. Projet parallèle de Tim Armstrong avec le batteur des minables Blink 182 qu''on n''attendait pas à pareille fête, plus un inconnu dont j''ai la flemme de chercher le nom dans le livret du digipack, et de nombreux invités occasionnels. Ce « Transplants » est donc excellent. Après un premier titre abrasif et pénible, suivent le génial « Tall cans in the air », puis les quasi-pop « Dj Dj » et « Diamonds and guns » et le reste s''enchaîne d'une façon parfaite, montrant l'ouverture d'esprit de Tim Armstrong et sa culture musicale sachant s''abreuver à toutes sortes de bonnes influences. Le genre de Cd, fusionnel et (très) énergique que les Rod Hot Chili Peppers ont essayé de faire sans jamais vraiment y arriver. Rock high energy, pop, punk, rap, boucles techno dans ce qu'ils ont de meilleur se retrouvent dans ce « Transplants ». Promis, juré (et craché), un de ces jours j''écouterais sérieusement Rancid.
