I give my cat Gabapentin every night for a chronic condition. I need a dose that does not sedate him terribly, but still helps the pain. His chronic kidney disease makes him a cheap date, it don't take much. The capsules are 100 mg and the powder inside weighs about 125 mg with the added inactive ingredients. I try to give him about a third of powder, which weighs approximately 40 mg. I calibrate it. I add the plastic accessory and 1/2 of an empty capsule in a tiny cup thing that holds the capsule perfectly upright, and tare it to zero. Then I begin to add the powder into the capsule. The display reads zero until I've almost added ALL the powder, then it suddenly jumps up... to something like 63 mg (it varies). I look into the pill capsule I've poured from, and it is EMPTY... so it SHOULD weigh about 125 mg (it varies)! So I start over, without the accessories, just pouring all the powder from a capsule onto the silver scale platform and it weighs about 125. So I start over like the original process, but this time, I weigh a capsule fresh from the bottle; of course, it weighs a little more because the powder is in a capsule now, but I confirm that it weighs a little more than 125 mg. Then I make sure it is still tared, and I try to pour about a third of the powder into my little capsule in its holder... And AGAIN, it does not register until most or all of the powder is dispensed... If I stop when I think I've poured 1/3 out, the scale still reads zero. I have read that most of these scales don't accurately weigh less than 50 mg... this one does seem to be able to weigh less than 50 mg, IF you have not tared it with an accessory on it, and IF you put the full amount on all at once. But still it's a mystery why, in my original process, when it finally does give the weight, it is HALF what it should be! And since it won't register until all the powder is dispensed, it should be 125 mg, well over that 50 mg handicap, but it only says it weighs about 60 mg. It makes it pretty useless for me, because the only way to get 40 mg is to pour it all into the silver platform, then remove a little at a time into an empty capsule, until the scale registers 125ish minus 40. And then I have to ASSUME it's correct, but who knows? Then I have to get the rest off the platform hoping not to waste too much.
