Do they have any sediment or sand that needs to be filtered?

No There is no sediment that I have found. Sometimes I need less than one button of palm sugar and will chop it up. However, it all fully dissolves.

is the sugar made from sugar cane or date?

Certainly not from sugarcane. From Wikipedia: "Palm sugar was originally made from the sap of the Palmyra palm, the date palm or the sugar date palm. Now it is also made from the sap of the Arenga pinnata (sugar palm) and the nipa palm...."

Do these blocks have a shelf life please.

Current stock has between 45-90 days left before it's best before date

In my experience, this is more like south Asian jaggery. When I last got hold of true Gula Melaka it was much darker in colour more lie the colour of molasses, it also had a far richer flavour and aroma. Having said that this palm sugar works well in most of the Thai dishes I make.
