Like many people, I was once a victim of corporate downsizing, and struggled to find work afterwards, as the bills and anxiety grew. The movie does a good job of portraying the struggle of life after layoffs and showing how cold and calculating executives can be when decided where to make cuts, treating people as numbers instead of humans with families and lives. Although I could empathize with the main characters' situations, I couldn't muster much empathy for the main characters themselves, who all come off as fairly unlikeable, at least initially. Afleck's character Bobby Walker is arrogant throughout and acts like a brat when asked by his wife to be a reasonable adult. Jones's character Gene McClary tries his best to be honorable, while also having an affair with another company executive. Cooper's Phil Woodward, rather than face the struggle of age discrimination and being unable to pay his bills, sinks into alcoholism and ultimately, takes his own life, leaving behind his wife and daughter. Top notch acting all around, but flawed characters that were hard to root for.
