The Vaavud app uses the magnetic field sensor that is built into all modern smartphones. The wind meter itself contains no electronics - just a couple of small magnets. The rotations are then measured with the magnetic field sensor and converted to wind speed. The design is very durable, and in the unlikely event that dirt, sand etc. should get into the moving parts the snap-fit design, allows it to be easily be dissembled by the user, and cleaned out with water. Because Vaavud is a so called cup-anemometer, a correct measurement can be obtained, no matter which direction the wind comes from. And the sensors in the phone are used to detect how the user holds the device, so false readings are automatically eliminated. Propeller-anemometers on the other hand must point directly towards the wind to get a precise reading. The details day it will work with the iphone 6 or 7 but it needs to be plugged into the headphone jack which doesn't exist!!The customer support via Twitter was pretty vague, saying it would work by holding the meter near the middle of my phone but I've not managed to achieve this.When it does work (I plugged it into an old phone) the measurements are useful - wind speed and location. When you open the software it will state that you don't have the xyz (their latest product, name I can't recall) so you have to confirm use of this, the older model.
