## Description

Product description Epifanes Clear Varnish, known around the world, is considered the ultimate in high gloss finish. This traditional marine varnish is based on tung oil, phenolic-modified alkyd resins and maximum U.V. absorbers. It has outstanding protection for all marine and household woods and can be applied to Interior and exterior woods above the waterline. It offers superior flow and durability. In addition, it has excellent flexibility and water resistance in all climate conditions. Ask anyone who has ever used Epifanes High Gloss Clear Varnish and you will learn why it is considered to be the world's best spar varnish Directions Apply the varnish using a brush, roll, or spray. Prepare the surface by sanding and cleaning before applying the varnish.

Review: Follow the instructions - If you are new to exterior varnishing follow the instructions. When they say at least eight coats, they mean it. If you think you know better then don't waste your money on this product, just go and buy cheap stuff and slap on a coat or two. A year later when you have learned your lesson, buy this stuff and do as they say. I gave this product four stars in 2016 with the intention of going back and changing it depending on how long it lasted. Well I'd give it five now. It lasted five years (I should have sanded and top coated each year as instructed and I would not have had to go down to wood again). It looks great, protects the wood very well, and lasts.
Review: The best there is - I have over the years used so called varnish from my local out of town, the one with the big orange sign. This varnish was like water and lucky to last a winter, which was a bind. On a visit to Greenwich I visited the Cutty Sark and the timber work there was like a mirror with a high deep gloss. This got me hunting and I found Epifanes Clear Varnish in a local boat yard. Yes it is more expensive but what a difference. From a drab patio door and windows to one that I am now proud of. Yes make the effort and give it a try. My best DIY find for years.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does epifanes dry clear or does it have a yellow or orangey color after it dries?**
A: Same as John, my experience is that it dries clear but may shade over the years, 2 years of a transom weather exposed and it still has original color, fingers crossed. Epiphanes is expensive but I don't have a single bad thing to say say about it...which is rare for me to say.

**Q: Can I use epifanes over linseed oil**
A: Linseed oil is the base for most oil based stains. It needs to be mostly to completely dry and not puddled. If possible, wipe over the linseed area with a good paint thinner to eliminate the puddles, and let it dry. I use Naphtha for my pre-wipe to help eliminate waxes and other surface contaminants. Epifanes should go over the linseed oil nicely if you follow the application directions. I have used it over many colored stains with the linseed oil base.

**Q: how much do I need to do 2 coats on 50 sq.ft.**
A: It depends on a couple of things. If you thin the varnish (recommended) and the type of wood. Bare dry porous wood like an oak would take several coats of thinned just to penetrate. My best guess woul be one can thinned 50 / 50 to seal, being about 3 / 4 coats sanded between coats. It will take the most of another can full strength, 3/4 coats sanded between to get the classic result I have always experienced with this product. BTW, after a summer in the weather, my teak bench and chairs look like they are covered with a coat of thick ice. INCREDIBLE stuff!!!

**Q: Could I use a fine nap paint roller to cover a 10 by 20 foot floor with this product? The floor will be exposed to some sun and rain.**
A: I have rolled the product many times, following behind with a brush tipped with the brushing liquid to smooth. Epifanes produces different types with varying amounts of UV protection.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High gloss slow drying
*by S***B on 10 June 2021*

Great stuff but do your research to make sure you're getting the right stuff for the right job. This gives you a brilliant finish but it's slow drying. Other products may not give you such a good finish but dries faster & harder and may be better for harder warning surfaces. But if you want a brilliant finish and it's not going to take a bashing (walking on) then this is the one to get
