They were a good compromise - much cooler than plimsolls, but much cheaper than trainers. They lasted the twice a week use well before he grew out of them, looking as good as new. I then inherited them (it being that small window when we were both size 3), so the rest of the review is based on my experience with them. I wear them as summer shoes (my sherpa lined Converse always come out as soon as the weather hints at getting cold). Canvas shoes are not known for being overly supportive and these are no different. I do find them comfortable though - more comfortable than my canvas Converse. They have lasted well and are still looking good. The black-edged sole makes them much easier to maintain than a white one would be. They appear well made and I have never had any reason to doubt that they are not genuine Vans.
