## Description

All ten episodes from the fifth season of the mystery thriller series starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore. A modern reimagining and contemporary prequel to the 1960 Hitchcock classic 'Psycho', the series follows the strange relationship between Norman Bates (Highmore) and his overbearing mother Norma (Farmiga). Living in White Pine Bay, Oregon, the pair run a motel business on the Pacific coast. The mother-son relationship is something of a community concern, but Norman and Norma are both aware that White Pine Bay's citizens have many secrets of their own. In this season, Norman's mental state begins to deteriorate as he goes to extreme lengths to protect his dark secrets. The episodes are: 'Dark Paradise', 'The Convergence of the Twain', 'Bad Blood', 'Hidden', 'Dreams Die First', 'Marion', 'Inseparable', 'The Body', 'Visiting Hours' and 'The Cord'.

As one who vividly remembers the anticipation of seeing Hitchcock's Psycho on it's original release in 1960 (no admittance to the cinema once the screening had begun and no details of the plot revealed beforehand - those were the days !) I've been a keen fan of Bates Motel throughout it's five seasons and was looking forward to seeing how the producers wrapped the whole story up whilst remaining true to the spirit of the original film. I'm pleased to say that they didn't disappoint - the iconic character of Marion Crane (Rihanna putting in a totally credible performance) duly appears and the soundtrack as she drives to the Motel is strongly reminiscent of that used in the film.I have no intention of including any spoilers here apart from saying that Norman's psychosis after the events of season 4 is on display to it's full extent and the switching from Norman to "Mother" even during scenes is accomplished with considerable skill leaving the viewer in no doubt as to who they are watching. There is a palpable sense of melancholy hanging over the final two episodes as the story is brought to it's final conclusion. All the members of the cast deserve high praise for making their individual characters so believable since the beginning of this engrossing series ( I must confess to a particular fondness for Olivia Cooke as Emma who's expressive eyes are able to convey so much) and it's a testament to Freddie Highmore's skill that he has managed to make a serial killer so sympathetic (he also gets to script and direct some episodes).I'm sure that this is a series that will bear any number of repeat viewings in the future. For those interested I can confirm the available subtitles as follows :- English SDH / Danish / Dutch / Finnish / French / Norwegian and Swedish. The blu ray extras comprise Deleted Scenes / Gag Reel / Bates Motel - Closed for Business and Bates Motel - The Checkout.

It felt rather sad when I started watching this in the knowledge that it was the very last season of what for me has been such a compelling drama.I take my hat off to all those that were involved in the production of Bates Motel, it's been a terrific and thoroughly entertaining series. Amazingly, this series never flagged, the storylines were well-constructed and the tension was maintained through each and every one of its episodes. I did wonder if the makers of this drama could actually bring it to a satisfying conclusion - and I'm very pleased to say that they did!Vera Farmiga was a revelation as the actress who brilliantly and convincingly portrayed Norma, and Freddie Highmore was magnificent as Norman ("what's for dinner, mother?"...). Some of the other main actors/actresses should not be forgotten either - Max Thieriot, who played Norman's thoughtful, sometimes unconventional step-brother, Dylan, Olivia Cooke, who played the sweet and lovely Emma and last, but not least, Nestor Carbonell, who played the enigmatic Sheriff Alex Romero. If you haven't seen any of the Bates Motel series and enjoy spooky, weird, atmospheric dramas where unhinged characters do some unexpected things, then I would implore you to check out this cracking, stylish drama. It's five stars all the way from me on this one and, not surprisingly, it's something I highly recommended.
