Orbit 62100 Yard Enforcer Motion-Activated Sprinkler

We have been having problems for years with cats using our garden as their personal toilet. We had at least five different cats use our garden and we had tried everything from pepper to cat sprays we even got three metal cat figures with marble eyes which are meant to scare cats away nothing seemed to work. We have three small children so we do need to be careful what we use and we did not want anything to hurt the cats, but we had enough, one morning my husband cleaned 30 cats poo off our lawn that was one days worth and the final straw. I saw this product and at first I was concerned as its quite alot of money to spend but we were at the end of our tether with the cats that had taken over our garden, we want somewhere where our children can play without the worry of them stepping into cats poo. The orbital yard enforcer is absolutely fabulous I cannot recommend this enough. My husband put it together without any problems and he used the connectors provided which were fine we live in the UK and this product is produced in the US but we did not have any issues connecting it to our hose so I am unsure why some people have had problems we did not have any. It is motion sensed so as soon as a cat steps into our garden it is triggered off and sprays, I love it we have our garden back, just after one day it is completely poo free and cat free and the kids think its amazing running though the sprinkler in the summer I just need to remember to switch it off when I want to put my washing out. So if you are worried about spending out so much money I would definitely say it is worth every penny it I a solid and sturdy sprayer. I am more then pleased with is.

We have had this Orbit 62100 Yard Enforcer Motion Activated Sprinkler as a pest deterrent now for well over a year so I feel that I can give a fairly comprehensive review of how it has performed for us. It has been in the garden come rain or shine (and even snow) for all that time and so is a bit weather-worn. Our garden is small and surrounded on three sides by other gardens so we don’t have issues with wild deer or anything like that - just cats, or rather a cat who has decided that our garden rather than theirs is a suitable location for its toilet. We have tried the ultrasonic deterrents, but they simply don’t work and putting down cayenne pepper etc. is only effective after the event and until the next time it rains. So, having researched the various water-based options we opted for this as the quality seemed to be the best that was available. It comes at a price though, and it really should be well made for this much money. It feels and looks solid and the mainly metal construction which probably explains why it is still working now (with some degradation of the unit). If we had bought one the competitor plastic ones by other makes I seriously doubt that they would still be functioning by now. It actually looks a bit like some form of permitter defence tool (which in a sense it is). Maybe something from a remake of ‘The Thing’ or a hi-tech home security device. Your neighbour may be very curious, not to say concerned when they see this being set up. From memory it wasn’t too difficult to assemble it and get it ready to go, and so while I can’t now locate the instructions, they must have been adequate. By the way, we are still on the original 4x AA batteries we installed, so provided that it isn’t going off all the time you should get good battery life from it. It supposedly only uses a couple of cups a water per activation. I have no way of measuring that but we leave the garden tap on a low setting and turn it off during the day most days and haven’t noticed a spike in the water bill. We didn’t receive an adaptor to connect a UK hose to the unit and so had to buy one. We got Hozelock adaptor that fitted it from a garden centre or diy store (can’t recall which) and unlike the Hozelock hoses (see below) it has performed okay thus far. A brass connector would probably form a more water-tight connection, but if anything like the one we connect to at the other end to join the garden tap, you might never get the thing off again! As for hoses. Oh yes, therein lies a problem all of itself, finding a hose that can cope with the tap being on all the time and being left out in all that the British weather can throw at it. We have been through two Hozelock ones (one old, and one brand new and supposedly tough) seriously, don’t bother; a so-called non-kink unbreakable and very expensive one (I forget the make but they are British and they even sent one of their reps out to try and discover why its connectors kept leaking - he didn’t we were refunded and then binned it with the rep’s blessing); an expandable one which worked fantastically with the Orbit until it sprung a leak as they are prone to do; and finally (hopefully), on recommendation from another owner of the Orbit, we are currently using a Faithful heavy-duty Builders hose, which so far is working well. The moral of the story is depending on your outside tap connections be prepared to invest in some brass connectors and to try various hoses out, especially if you plan on using the Orbit a lot and intend leaving it on overnight and in all sorts of weather. It will take some adjustment when you first use it to get it right for your intended use and your garden. You can adjust the duration (it is on), distance the water spays, plus have it come on during the day, at night, or always (or ‘off’, of course). The arc of the water spray is also adjustable to cover a wide area (width-wise). The rubber o-ring underneath this turning mechanism, has perished on ours to the extent that it broke and then came off, so that arc control doesn’t function quite as well as it did and it feels a bit loose. This has resulted in it spraying too widely at times when not set to do so. I may buy one of those multi-packs of rubber o-rings to see if one of them fits to solve this problem. The sensor part is adjustable up and down and has quite a wide area in which it will detect movement. At times it seems very sensitive and other times waving a hand or boot in front of it to test it won’t always set it off. There is also a lag between sprays to avoid wasting water so if it has just triggered then it won’t go off again straight away. In general the sensor is, as with our trail camera, generally okay but at times a weakness. Both have a tendency to be set off by fences panels and vegetation blowing on the wind, but conversely will still miss something larger and slower like a hedgehog or broom handle being waved at them. Overall the sensor does a decent job though, but you will have to be patient and try various angles when trying to deter an animal incursion. When it goes off it also makes a rapid clicking noise, which adds to the deterrent, but woke us up a few times in the summer with the windows open wondering what on earth it was. It can also function as a garden sprinkler but we haven’t used that function at all and aren’t likely to so I can’t comment on it. The Enforcer has metal spike with two side plates to stand on to get it securely into the ground (a bit like treading on a shovel). Despite being metal these both bent on ours a while back, which is very disappointing. It is still usable but less secure than it would otherwise have been. Perhaps they don’t have to contend with the Essex clay type of soil in the States? As well as the o-ring and the foot/balance bits for the spike taking a hit, the body itself is showing signs of weathering and wear. It still works okay and has been in some ropey weather and low and high temperatures so that is quite impressive really. In all the time we have owned and used the Orbit we have yet to catch it spraying the offending cat when under the watchful eye of our trail camera, but we have heard it going off late at night and noticed an absence of said moggy’s ‘present’ on that location thereafter so we think it must have worked. The trail camera wasn’t always in-situ and has it own flaws as well. The Orbit has caught out a few unwary pigeons who weren’t harmed but had an unexpected shower. As with all deterrents though you need to keep using it to reinforce the message and we find that we now need to move it to the front garden where the cat poo problem has also moved. This will be a challenge though as it is also the route the postman and others take cutting across our law to next door, plus if the spraying arc goes doolally because of the missing o-ring then we could end up soaking passers-by on their way to the station. It will take some careful placement and switching off early in the morning. Any very early commuters or dog walkers (who have also been know to let their dogs poo on our lawn) will just have to take their chances. PROS: Well made overall, with a largely metal construction and a serious, military-grade ‘secure the perimeter’ type appearance. Really good options re duration, night/day/both use and range, and very adjustable over all. Sensor works okay - not fantastically but okay. It is good at picking up those who try and sneak in from the side (I know because I tried when testing it). The sprayer works well even with the garden tap on hardly at all and apparently uses very little water per activation. Battery life is very good though it may be different for you if you are having constant incursions and triggers. It has largely stood the test of time in all that the British weather could throw at it. Certainly powerful enough and can reach a large area in a small garden like ours. CONS: Although very well made the bent spike supports and perished o-ring were a bit of a disappointment. No UK hose fitting adaptor included. The sensor while pretty good will sometimes miss things. In general you will have to fiddle about a bit with the settings to get it right for your needs. A deterrent needs constant usage to work. Finding a suitable hose that can cope with being out and on a lot of the time in all weathers isn’t easy and several unbreakable, no-kink hoses just weren’t up to the job. It is a high quality item that wouldn’t look out of place in a military tool catalogue, but even so the price will put most people off unless they have a serious issue and have tried most other solutions. You need to have the garden tap on all the time. If that connection leaks as ours often did with the various hose issues we have had then you would be wasting a lot of water if you don’t notice or are out. We only have ours on when we are in, but this could easily happen at night when we are asleep and soak the lawn and waste water and money. OVERALL: Despite the wear and tear and the trials and tribulations of the hose selection we are glad that we bought this. It is a lot of money but unlike audio deterrents and all the other supposed solutions it actually works. And unlike fence spikes etc. there’s no harm to the animals - just an unexpected shower to make them think again. I would ideally prefer a motion activated sprinkler that worked off a reservoir rather than the hose, but the only make that made those had very mixed reviews and they are pretty much unavailable over here anyway. In so far as I am aware then this is the best of its type that you can get. It isn’t perfect by any means and it is a lot of money, but if you need one then there’s little else around so I can recommend it.

After a daily cat deposit on my lawn, I bought the Yard Enforcer hoping that cold water would succeed where lion dung, high frequency noise, pepper, and so on, had failed. I have not had to dig out vomit-inducing cat diarrhoea from the lawn or borders in the last three months, which is nice! 5 stars and worth every penny for this reason. I haven't seen a cat (out of at least a dozen that are very local) in the garden for several months, which is nice for the birds too. As well as the cold water blast, the Enforcer makes a rat-a-tat-rat machine gun noise which scares off cats, dogs, foxes, squirrels, pigeons, children etc. The cat-squirter, as named in our household, has got me, my wife and both children at least once each so you need to remember to turn it off! The children love it on a hot, sunny day, though. You can adjust the Yard Enforcer to aim at a very specific spot, a wider area, or daisy chain more sprinklers to cover a seriously large area, though this would require good water pressure/flow. I aim it in a 30 degree angle across the lawn to cover the usual cat dumping ground. The sensitivity is adjustable, as is duration. The ground spike is metal and appears durable. I tilted it forward slightly to reduce the range/lower the spray, for a range of 4-5 metres, in case the water went over its intended target. Only a couple of minor concerns with this product. Firstly, mine has a really tiny pinhole leak when the sensor is activated and the enforcer is going off. This is not much of a problem, but there is potential for it to get worse. Secondly, the sprinkler head can be set to cover a small area but occasionally gets stuck at one end, and doesn't return. I think this is mostly down to water pressure, when washing machine/shower/taps are in use, but I would hate to see a cat get away without a good soaking due to the sprinkler head sticking... My only real worry is having to leave the hose on. This is fine for much of the year, but inevitably will have to leave it, and the enforcer off, over the icy wintry months. Hopefully the cats will have been thoroughly conditioned to 'get off my land' by then. Overall, I trusted reviews to import this to th UK, and it was worth waiting a few weeks to get this result. Probably over 100 cat****s that I have not had to deal with!

The PIR sensor doesn’t work properly, it is very difficult to detect a person, but for a cat it has no reaction, wasted money

This works well I have it set up and it works well the setting make it easy to target specific areas and can be adjusted very easily, if you purchase this for uk use you will need the 3/4 adapter for it too I’m using hoselock product and they work well I have no leaks at all but I’m only in day 2, overall does the job I got this for cats I hope soon they will be conditioned to seat away as they hate this I just find it pricey for what it does, the material and quality is good so I hope this lasts and it does look like my problem will be sorted 🙂

I'm writing this review to correct some misleading information provided in other reviews on this product, which influenced my purchase. I've been wanting a high quality cat deterrent sprinkler for a while so I looked at the Orbit 62100 and I read through a few of the reviews on here to find out other people's experiences. The first I read was a very long, detailed and useful review by 'Vine Voice' and although the information they provided may have been correct for their unit in 2021, there are some important differences which I feel buyers in the UK should be aware of: Firstly, the review states that the Yard enforcer has a 'mainly metal construction' - this is not the case - when my unit arrived, the only metal part is the stake which embeds in the ground and the threaded brass ring for connecting a hose - the rest of the unit is plastic and the plastic appears to be the same quality as I have seen on 'the Scarecrow' - a much cheaper animal deterrent sprinkler. 'Vine Voice''s unit may have been all metal back in 2021 - I don't know - but companies change designs to cut corners and I think it's important that buyers are not mislead by out of date information. The 'mostly metal' construction reported in 'Vine Voice's review was a big selling point for me, as metal construction usually means better quality and longer life , so I was disappointed to find that the Yard Enforcer was mostly plastic. Secondly, 'Vine Voice's review indicates that batteries were included with their unit. Again, that may have been the case in 2021 but no batteries were included with my unit. A third point to be aware of for UK buyers - the Yard Enforcer comes with a US hose ring fitting - there is no UK adapter provided, even though the product is being sold in the UK, neither is there any information in the instructions or the box as to what type of adapter UK buyers will need to get the unit up and running. I have emailed Orbit Customer Support with this question but as yet have had no reply. I think it's important for buyers to be aware that, although 'Orbit' is a U.S. company and the Yard Defender sold on Amazon is imported from the U.S., the unit itself appears to be made in China ('made in China' is clearly written in the plastic on the fittings) and the quality control on many products coming out of Chinese factories can be very poor. I bought three 'Scarecrow's - a cheaper motion-activated animal deterrent sprinkler and they have all failed for one reason and another. The problem with products of this origin is there is often no customer support or spare parts available when the unit eventually breaks so you inevitably have to throw it in the bin instead of repairing it. With regard to the 'Yard Enforcer' I have just bought through Amazon, I am uncertain of the warranty situation but I imagine it won't be very long, knowing Amazon, and with Orbit being a US company that likely has no UK Customer Support base, I have no idea whether in six months I will be throwing a £100 Yard Enforcer in the bin, if it develops a fault. Of course I hope the extra cost of this unit is an indication of better manufacturing and it remains fully functional for years to come. For now, I can't even test the unit until I find out what hose fitting adapter I need and then go and buy one. Happy Days!! Update - Thanks to other UK purchasers who encountered the same hose fitting problem with this unit and have posted questions and answers here on Amazon, I was able to get a lead on the correct fitting. Following advice I bought a 3/4" BSP male to quick-lok brass connector - it screwed in but didn't make a seal - the threaded ring on the Yard Enforcer was still wobbling around loose and water spurted out everywhere. Fortunately, a local hydraulics company managed to get it to seal up by placing an O ring inside, which forced the ring far enough back that it tightened up. Now it's working I have another problem - the spraying mechanism doesn't work properly - it doesn't turn fully for it to click and move back in the other direction - it just gets stuck spraying in one direction. I want to warn people buying this or any Orbit product in the UK - Customer Support here appears to be non-existent. I've emailed 'Orbit Europe' three times with my set-up problems hoping for some assistance and absolutely no reply.

It is surely not beyond the wit of man to construct a motion activated sprinkler, the most humane method of repelling unwanted animal intruders, that actually does its job. Good quality components that work - sensitive PIR and photo sensors, a decent impact spray head, a robust brass hose inlet, a reliable solenoid pipe valve - cost only a few pounds more than junk that doesn’t. Unfortunately not one of those I’ve bought or seen uses anything but junk that doesn’t. The Yard Enforcer, which at least has a metal spike and hose connector, is probably the best of them, but that is not saying much. As supplied, it fails in all its primary functions, although there are workarounds available as swap-ins, at a price (see below) 1. Connection to mains water - fail The water inlet is USA 3/4” Garden Hose Thread, which has a pitch of 11 threads per inch. British BSP connectors, with a pitch of 14 threads per inch, do not fit. No adaptor is included. 2. The “day/night” function - fail. Set to activate at night only, it cannot detect daylight, even bright sunlight, if it is itself not in full sun. It activates without differentiation both day and night. (As it is Autumn and our garden is shaded from now until April,it gets benefit of the doubt that it might activate if in full sun.) Obviously calibrated for California and the Western desert states, not for UK latitudes 3. Spraying Impulse spray head works impeccably traversing left to right. Once. As soon as the pin to reverse its direction trips, it stops dead, and splutters impotently at the far right of its sweep, producing a spray of about 2m. Not quite the 40’ advertised. It does not reset itself so there it remains for all subsequent activations. 4. Animal detection - fail Great at detecting humans. So far appears to Ignore cats. 5. Orbit Customer service - utterly, dismally pathetic fail Asked for a replacement spray head for the faulty one, Orbit Europe customer support suggested merely returning the entire unit to Amazon and ordering another. (“We don’t carry any stock,” they said). This would also, no doubt, take weeks to arrive and there’s no guarantee it would work either. (Almost the reverse, in fact). US customer service, which promises a long warrantee period and full customer support, did not trouble themselves with responding to emails at all. There are ways round some of these failings: 1. Adaptors from GHT to either a standard Hozelock/Gardena quick connector or to British Standard Pipe Thread can be bought (from the well known auction site) online. At a price. 2. An irrigation timer, a separate unit, solves the day/night issue. At a considerable price. 3. A new good quality brass spray head to replace the shoddy cheap plastic thing supplied solves the stalling and range issue. At a price. 4. I’m working on it. 5. Unfortunately, there is no way round crap customer service/support. That turd cannot be polished.

I was really annoyed cleaning every day cat and fox poo. Did some research comparing different brands. This one is quite pricy but it is solid and motion detector works not just well but also at night which is not the case with many other brands. And in our case cats and foxes never visited our garden during the day because they learned my husband is not very inviting with them. But nights and early mornings we could not control. I bought just one but put it in place where they usually come. I recommend to watch a couple of days with camera. In our case there is a thick brick wall between us and our neighbours which is perfect for cats and foxes to walk. The instruction included is absolute rubbish. Do waste your time go immediately on YouTube. There was also a problem with US connector. I asked previously what I can buy to connect. Use same recommendation as you can find here in “answers”. Make sure that connections are very tight and water doesn’t leak anywhere. It is important to find how much water tap is open. If it is open not enough than pressure will be too low. Do not forget to switch it off in the morning. My cat has got a trauma 😂 First night I heard it worked twice. By the way it is quite noisy but not that much as I expected . With closed windows you can’t hear. If you are worried to disturb your neighbours rest assured that they will not be. Because I am quite sensitive myself to all the noises and I would not use something that is like working tractor at 4am in the morning. Anyway, since we have our “guardian” no poo found, my flower beds are without holes and mulch is in place. P.s. If someone created something like this for slugs and snails my garden would be garden of Eden. Recommend
