The name Beastmaster became a household name for a generation of television watchers. A sequel was released in theaters in 1991 based on the notoriety of the character. Beastmaster 2: Through The Portal of Time became a standalone sequel that quickly became a cult classic in its own right despite its failure at the box office. I saw Beastmaster 2 a lot at 2:00 am in the morning on sleepless weekends. In 1996, Beastmaster III: The Eye of Braxus was released as a made for cable television sequel: the film was released on VHS the following year. Despite the criticisms of the film's 1996 CGI special effects, the film has a solid plot, interesting characters, and plenty of action.Unfortunately, despite their popularity, these films have been rather hard to find on hard media. Vinegar Syndrome just released The Beastmaster on UHD 4K blu ray. Beastmaster 2 and Beastmaster III have never received blu ray releases; they were only released on VHS and LaserDisc.Now, for the first time ever, the entire Beastmaster trilogy is available on DVD. The new Beastmaster (1982) seems to be a DVD copy of the newest blu ray. The picture fits the screen perfectly. As with the new UHD 4k, there is some picture grain due to the age of the film.Beastmaster 2 (1991) and Beastmaster III (1996) are displayed in a 4:3 format. Beastmaster 2 is not sourced from the theatrical negative or it would have the 16:9 format. Beastmaster III was filmed for television so it would still retain its 4:3 format. The definition of Beastmaster III is a vast improvement over other sources. Youtube streams the film, but it is obviously a rip from an old faded VHS tape. At times BM III is blurry and at other times it is sharp and crisp. Considering that this is the only Beastmaster III DVD available then it is more than worth having especially when you consider how long out of print the film has been.Beastmaster 2: Through The Portal of Time is actually a really decent film. I was completely blown away by the film's musical scoring. BM 2 has the best soundtrack out of all of the Beastmaster films. This is certainly a film that you will want to watch with the speakers turned up.The story:The Beastmaster. A young boy named Dar, who is the lost son of a deposed king, grows up in an agrarian village with his adopted father. The boy grows up to learn that he has a psychic bond with animals. Ten years later Dar, is a village farmer who has learned the art of barbarian sword fighting from his adopted father. One day Dar's village is invaded by barbarian raiders. Dar is rendered unconscious during battle. He awakes only to find that his village has been burned to the ground, and his tribe has been slaughtered. Thus, his quest for revenge begins. He befriends an eagle that scouts the lands miles around Dar. Dar's telepathy allows him to see everything the Eagle sees. Dar later picks up a black tiger that fights beside him in battle. Finally, there are Dar's two ferrets which can get Dar out of tough situations.Beastmaster 2. Dar's newest adventure takes a science fiction turn that adds a refreshing take to the franchise. Dar is on the heels of an evil Warlock named King Arklon. Although he is proficient with a sword, Arklon prefers to fight with an energy projectile weapon. It is implied that the weapon is ancient and can run out of power. It seems to be like some kind of Atlantean technology. Arklon meets a witch that leads Arklon through a portal into our world in the 1990s in an attempt to steal a neutron bomb.The fight scenes are intense. The movie is well worth the watchBeastmaster III: The eye of Braxis is a great movie that abandons the science fiction themes of the previous film for a straightforward fantasy romp. There are plenty of interesting characters. There are tons of fight scenes to keep one entertained. Although some would argue over which sequel is the better, BM 2, or BM III, I lean towards this film for its compelling new characters. The only downside to this entry is the weak special effects.Overall is this DVD box set worth owning? YES! This is currently the only way to get decent copies of BM 2, and BM III. Hopefully, this will sell enough units to show that there is a demand for these old classic barbarian films, and we will get a blu ray derived from a restored print in the near future. The Beastmaster and his animal pals are an amazing posse to watch fighting the forces of evil. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Great Deal for those Who Love the 80s *by D***E on March 19, 2025* Who was not a Beastmaster fan in the 80s? Come on, before you knew what a ferret was, the ferrets were cool right? What about the batpeople? Today, when I look at these films, I laugh at how cheesy they were, but the thing about most of the 80s films is that they had great storylines, and this is what made them classics. I am so glad that I found this deal so now when it is my turn for movie night, this is what we're watching. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great 3 disc set for the sequels *by B***N on February 2, 2025* I love the original BeastMaster, it’s a sword and sorcery classic. The Vinegar Syndrome 4K set is amazing if you are a fan. The sequels in no way compare the first film, but they are fun for what they are. The second film was a major letdown when it released, but is silly 90’s fun decades later. BeastMaster literally goes through a portal half way through the film and is in 1990’s Los Angeles. The third film, while it doesn’t compare to the first, gets back on track and stays rooted in its fantasy realm. Tony Todd and Casper Van Dien are nice additions the cast. The transfers look solid considering they are on dvd.
