A Seaman's Guide to the Rule of the Road

Nevermind the RYA book, or any other book for that matter, THIS is the book that will teach you colregs. It's "programmed", in that it's written in such a way that it almost requires no effort to remember the regs... you just read the book from left to right, answer the questions it asks (mostly in your head), and hey presto - you know colregs. Great buy.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who was taking his RYA Day Skipper exam. When I was struggling to learn the Collision Regulations many years ago someone pointed me towards this book. It uses programmed learning . It is simple to read and the short sentences and illustrations make it quick and easy to work through the book. After two readings I had learned all of the regulations. Over the years I occasionally skim through it just to brush up on my knowledge. I have yet to find a quicker way of learning the Collision Regulation. Several pages were marked and I returned it for a replacement using Amazons excellent free service. It was replaced within a week. Only got to pay your taxes now Amazon!

Great book to help learn rules of the road

What on first appearance appears to be the kind of book that will have you sleeping after a few pages in fact, turns out to be an interesting read. Purchased for my daughter who is intent on going into the RN as a warfare officer I thought I'd have a read before passing it over. The first few pages advise the reader as to why the book came about, how it is to be used and that it's a tried and tested method. This then leads on to the rules and I have to say, the read is very logical and very easy to understand. So good, I've got one for myself.

I really like this - it takes you through very steadily and without spurious commentary. You can pick it up for ten mins at a time, apart for some sections which take an hour or so to work through and you wouldn't want to put it down halfway through 'cos you'll never remember and have to start again.

In depth guide for our son who's in the Navy. He's very pleased with it so well worth the money.

When i started reading this i thought this was not the book for me but the this is approached is a very efficient way of learning with short "tests" after every subject. I would suggest not trying to do this repetitively as there is a lot to learn about col regs but learn a bit go out and use it in the real world and then go on to the next bit as it looks a whole lot different on the water but it is a very good way of learning a very big subject.

If you are studying for your boating licenses this book is a useful tool. Easy to reference and illustrated well.
