GoDice D20 Connected Polyhedral Real Physical Die for Online RPG Game Play

This is a great addition to my dice collection. For me I play a lot of D&D online with my friends, and after while you start to miss rolling actual dice instead of just typing a console command for it. Even though the tech is new, what they have here to start with is quite impressive. It intergrades with Roll20 and the laptop’s and Bluetooth really well, it was pretty easy and seamless. Discord, is a bit more of a hassle, you have to create a web hook for your server, but it works just as well. I got so addicted just rolling this baby. The design is beautiful, and it lights up when you roll a Nat 20 or Nat 1! How awesome is that?! Definitely adds a little more fun and excitement to the rolls! Anyway here are some pros and cons I found with the dice so far, so you can make your best informed decision. Pros It’s great if you play a lot of D&D online, gives some new life to rolling online if you’re tired of typing up dice commands. Intergrades with the Laptop/Desktop really well, as long as you have Bluetooth you’re fine. Beautifully Intergraded with Roll20, just download the app and you’re ready to go. Charges quickly, you can place it on the charger for 10-20 seconds and it’s fully charged, ready to go, that’s incredible! Super fast and convenient! What they have for starters is fantastic, great integration for Roll20 and discord, it this is what they have already, I can’t imagine what they’ll add next. Cons A bit of a learning curve, but the process is not so difficult, maybe discord is a bit more of a hassle to set up, but if you’re the DM or a friend is willing to set up your dice web hook in their server, you should be fine. You have to line up the shell correctly, or your results will be off. It might be a hassle to set up multiple shells, to me, setting up one is good enough for me. It’s a bit expensive, one single d20 shell and goDice is about 40 dollars. Very steep price for the novelty, but for me I got 10 dollars off, 30 dollars for one dice to me is a bit more reasonable. Technology is still in its infancy, but what they have so far shows promise. There is no mobile app for the d20 GoDice specifically, just some game app using their d6 go dice. If they had a d20 goDice app, they would be golden. GoDice, go make it happen lol. In conclusion, I think it’s worth getting, specially if you play a lot of online D&D and use platforms like Roll20 and Discord. I haven’t tired Foundry, but with what I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if set up with Foundry is just as easy. I love the novelty, it’s a great little add on to my dice collection, and it satisfies my itch to roll real dice when playing online D&D. Hopefully in time, the technology will improve and become more affordable, and I can’t wait to see what this company does next.

I have been waiting for a connected die from a kickstarter that has no estimated delivery date, so I thought I'd give GoDice a try to see how well it worked. I was interested in the connected part of the die and the ability to tap into the API to code to the die as well. This is my initial review. As I work more with the die, I reserve the right to update this review. I bought a single die - the D20 Shelled version - because I didn't want to invest $100+ without knowing how well it worked, plus I am most interested in the use of the die for D&D. The goDice are D6 dice that use a shell that wraps around the D6 to make the other size dice. For the D20 die, the wrapper is a nice solid piece of plastic that fits snuggly around the D6 to make it feel solid and rollable. Small magnets plus the snug fit make it feel like a solid die. The only issue with the D20 is that it is an oversized D20; however, it isn't so big it is an issue. Overall, as a die, the D20 is solid and I give it 5 stars for what has been done. The shell can be taken off and you have a standard D6 die you can use as well. My initial experience with the die was such that I thought it was defective. It wouldn't charge - or didn't seem to. I also couldn't simply connect to the die using Bluetooth. The die refused the connection. The die did, however, connect to the mobile app without issue. In reaching out to goDice, the support was fantastic and exceedingly fast to respond. They suggested cleaning the connection on the die. Between that and charging it a few times, it now seems to work much easier. I do notice that it charges to 98 or 99 percent in 10 to 12 seconds. To get to 100% takes a little longer, but it does get there and then flash to indicate a full charge. While there was initial trouble getting the die to work, now it seems to operate fine. Games - The app comes with games. Most require more than one die, so the value of the single D20 is limited. I believe there are about 3 games that work with one die. The die can also, however, be used with a webhook to connect to Discord and a couple of other apps. It does not currently appear to work with Fantasy Grounds or D&D Beyond. I did test the webhook with Discord and it was easy to connect, roll, and see the results. I also have used an HTML/javascript app with the webhook and it too worked easily with the die. Using the API you can control the two leds as well as get the values for the battery charge and the roll. There is sample code on GitHub to get you started with this. If I stopped right here, I'd give the die a little dink for the trouble getting started with it, but still rate it a 5. Unfortunately, I'll drop this to a 4 at this time due to connectivity. The die does connect using the webhook, but I find that the connection seems to get lost. I'm using the die within two feet of the Bluetooth antenna, so I know I'm will within the distance that there shouldn't be connectivity issue. Even so, I seems the connection is not solid and I have to reset the app or reconnect the die. This isn't a huge deal, but it is bothersome enough to drop the rating to a 4. The mobile app might maintain the connection better than the desktop system I've been using the die with. The one thing I've not fully tested that could change this rating is the balance of the die. So far it feels pretty good and seems to roll different numbers. I plan to test this. If it ends up favoring a number or side, then I'll update this review. Currently it seems relatively balanced. Overall, for connected dice being relatively new, I'm impressed with the D20 and very impressed with the D6.

It works great! Easy to set up. If you are using a device without bluetooth, you'll need to get an adapter(I got one for $5 here on amazon). When you put the 6 sided die into the 20 sided shell, make sure to have the 6 on the d6 facing the 20/8 on the d20 shell. Rolls show onscreen instantly and are accurate 100% of the time. Totally worth it if you don't like the roll20 dice algorithm.

The material used for the usb charger cabke is so thick the dice wont stay up when its charging. The app requires two go dice. Not sure why they sell a single one. The dice feels great and I'm sure it functions right but the company really should tie up loose ends like this.

I run a D&D campaign on Foundry VTT and this seemed like a fun, though unnecessary, addition to our sessions with the potential to streamline a few things on my end of our virtual table. Instead, I found the whole thing to be cumbersome to set up and annoying to actually use. Set-Up: Now, I don't think this was necessarily HARD to set-up, but it was hardly a quick and straightforward process. I was most bothered by the fact that I had to keep an app open on my phone for my GoDice D20 to work with Foundry VTT on my computer. I'm managing enough things as a DM and this added more clutter and more things I needed to prepare before each session. Also: be aware that GoDice's documentation is out of date, mentioning a module that needs to be installed that you'll find isn't compatible with the v12 of Foundry VTT. The good news is that the functionality that the module provided is now built directly into the VTT software, eliminating the need for the add-on. Lastly, getting the die to talk over your network can be a tricky if you're not used to dealing with mac addresses and network permissions. Be warned. Use: Once everything is set up. The die does as advertised. You can roll it and foundry will import the number rolled. The problem is the number of clicks you need to make each time you want to roll it. This is NOT the kind of thing where you can causally toss the die and have your result pop up. You instead need, to click through a series of prompts to tell Foundry VTT to start listening for the roll. Only then can you toss the die and import the result. And you need to do this every time. I spend just enough time around computers and programming to have an inkling as to why it is this way and why it would be difficult to make everything more reactive and dynamic, but those restrictions don't change the fact that using the die ultimately adds steps to the process of rolling, instead of streamlining anything. Conclusion: The GoDice D20 Connected does what it is advertised to do, but unless you REALLY REALLY want to be able to roll a physical die when playing online, this only detracts from the experience. And if you REALLY REALLY want to roll IRL, just roll a real die and manually enter the number. It's weirdly less of a hassle. I hope that someday this sort of thing advances to what I want it to be, but right now it feels under baked.

The idea is great, but it's a bit hard to stay connected. Especially with Foundry VTT. Plus the battery doesn't last a full 3-4 hour session

easy setup, simple use, I had a cheap Bluetooth adapter that was 5 years old (nice pc but no Bluetooth on the MB) and it still worked most of the time. I've since ordered a better one and it works perfect on Roll20 with my DnD group! WARNING: Does Not Help With Cursed Rolls!!! I Am Still Spat On By Gygax!

So I was apprehensive about ordering this, but connected it to my laptop, made sure the d6 was in the right way and it has been great to be able to roll a dice for online play!

I've used foundryVTT for nearly 4 years and done a lot of TTRPG systems and I've seen these products come and go off kickstarter (theres been a few and none worked very well.) But this GoDice D20 works pretty good and the integration was fantastic. It's simply the unfulfilled roll manager module on Foundry + their own GoDice Bluetooth module and you get the choice to either connect your phone/tablet that acts as the bluetooth bridge via SSL (Windows only) or via Web Socket (Just need to disable a setting in chrome.) You take the IP from the app; type it into the godice module in foundry; set the unfulfilled roll module up and it just works. There are a few things to note however and definitely improvements that could be made: - The D20 shell is horrible for readability; the white and black makes it very hard for a camera to pickup and I would of liked to see a design where the light is forced up through the number for better readability. - This system works great with 1 - 4 dice but I can see as soon as you go to 6 - 8 that you will be needing to charge these dice at some point during session. - And while they only take 10 to 20 seconds to charge taking them out of the case can take a second and during that you can't roll it. Manageable for a couple at break time but charging them each a few times and doing shell changes makes me not want to buy too too many of them; either better battery life or a design that allowed charging from within the shell would fix this gripe and a charger capable of charging multiples at once for heavy dice users. - You must place the D6 in a very specific orientation in the shell or you won't get accurate results; it also requires you physically hold your finger down on it for the whole 10 - 20 seconds of charging. Pros: - Out of the box; basic understanding of Foundry; two module installs; a quick typing of a IP; use the unfulfilled rolls module to change your D20 to the bluetooth dice and bam. - Accurate. I have roughly 1 weird weird every 2 - 3 hours of rolling. - I get about 3.5hrs of charge from 100% to 0% but I bet with time I will get less time as the tiny battery gets used in it. - Great integration; love the foundry app and the module and it was very well done. Because it intercepts the roll management even with a super big 150 module setup I haven't found any conflicts. Looking at the product line as it is in 2024 tho I need to point out that buying this D20 alone is IMO better than buying the D20 shell alone because this package comes with the battery-less USB charger which I find to be a lot easier to charge dice with and that large multi-dice holder design isn't very useful as most people have dice cases. But despite these minor critiques; the product works as advertised and only time will tell if they're durable and can handle my rolling addiction.; me; my players and even people who GM for me on Foundry all love these dice and the $30 or so for the D20 alone isn't a bad price point. I would gladly pay more however if we had native d4,d8,d12,d20 that just charged like the D6 does I would also pay way more if there was a wireless charging option!

I bought these for playing Dungeons and Dragons online with a group of friends; While they do the job they say, they're not exactly reliable and can create more problems than they're worth. Pros: - You're able to send rolls digitally to Discord, Foundry or Roll20. (Unreliably.) - Yup... that's about all the pros I got for these dice. Cons: - For what you're getting and the technology these dice are overpriced. The technology in these dice is cheap, you can make it at home or order the parts online for a couple of dollars. - The dice is a little larger than a regular D20 - There is no extension for Firefox, you're forced to use Chrome or Chromium browser. - Bluetooth connectivity is not always reliable - Battery life is not ideal. I commonly have to charge the dice multiple times during a single 4 hour session. - Their support team does not seem very knowledgeable; They provide blanket responses that appear to be more or less copy paste.

Bought this as I have been running some Shadowdark, and I though it would be fun to incorporate my physical rolls into Foundry VTT. Got the dice at half price, thinking it would be a great buy... How wrong I was. Firstly, the app get the dice numbers wrong. The D6 inner dice is placed correctly, but it thinks a 1 is an 18, and gets every other numbers messed up. I have moved the dice inside around to make sure it is not weirdly oriented or supposed to go in a specific way (not just side). Remains borked Then we come to connecting it to Foundry. A LOT of us who self-host have to do so through a fixed IP address thanks to constraints from our ISPs. The app will NOT let you enter an IP address for it to connect to so, if you are using a fixed IP, or a VPN, it cannot connect. I got this dice for half price, and I feel utterly ripped off. The online help is poor - and the video on how to connect the die is so old that one of the mods it says you need... you don't need and cannot install on modern versions of FOuncry VTT. Folks, stick to either normal dice or using Dice so Nice with Foundry... this thing is NOT what you are looking for.
